View Full Version : Lantus: Does this really matter?

Many say that BG should not rise or fall by 30 points during the night when using Lantus. Deacon's BG does tend to rise and then fall by morning. Part of this is probably his split dose and partly because of growth hormones. Does this phenomenon really matter since he is now waking up in the 100's? Now he isn't rising too high either but he does rise more than the allowable 30 points.

My DS does that too but we were told that it wasn't the lantus but that it was the humalog going thru its peak and valley. We were asked to take his BS at 3am to watch for trends instead of 430am since by the time it was 430a he would be going lower from the humalog after peak.
Lately his #s are crazy up and down. Allergies I think ?

It depends, as we all say YDMV. If you don't see a rise 5 hours after the last bolus, and the BG tends to hang there for a while, it's probably a good dose of Lantus. With summer upon us, and higher activity levels, it's probably more difficult to use this rule, because activity tends to lower the sleeptime numbers. Perhaps he's rebounding, or it's growth hormones, or you have a close dose of Lantus, but not tuned in to absolute pinpoint precision (which isn't expected anyways). I think as long as you see him rising in the 100's, and he isn't rising after his meal boluses leave his system, his dose is probably good.

My SD did that one night (at 2:00 am), but then she was swimming a couple times that day prior too so I chalked it up to probably the extra exercise causing the spike. We try to never give Novolog past dinner time so I knew it wasn't that.

Aaron Endo told us to put him to bed if BG is over 100. Well we have found if Aaron is just over 100 he will go really low by morning. So if he is 154 or low 200's with his 5u of lantus he usually is around high 100's when he awakes still sometimes 104.
Aaron loves milk so if he is in 100s prior to bed we give him a cup of milk and that helps along with lantus to keep him at a good level.
