Aaron's not in college but I'm posting here because it's an older-kid thing.

He wants to do the 30-hour famine -- a World Vision fundraiser through the schools. Basically they have just juice (and "if you feel ill, one cup of rice) through a school day and then for an overnight in a school gym. It's quite an event -- kids from all the local schools, entertainment, games, the kids who play music bring instruments, etc.

Our CDE has given us some tips and thinks he can do this. Of course he'll have extra food with him in case he needs it, a cell phone in case he runs into trouble and needs to bail, and I'll make sure the supervising teachers from his school know the deal and keep an eye out for him.

But of course I'm still nervous and would love to hear if any of your kids have tried something similar, and how it worked out??

I did that with my youth group when I was in high school. I drank a lot juice, cranked my basals way down, and monitored blood sugars very closely. I was also surrounded by awesome people that watched me. :)

As long as he can test a lot and drink juice when low (even when sleeping), I would let you son try.

My son hasn't done it but I'd let him try if he wanted. As long as he tests often and they have plenty of juice, he should be fine. Is he on the pump? That would be the easiest way.

Yes, he's on a pump, so that will help a lot. And... I don't imagine there will be much sleeping!

I've done a 24hr fast before. I drank juice to keep my BG up, and I checked often. I was on lantus and novolog, and we had my basal pretty much figured out, so I was fine. If he wants to do it, I would let him try. I would make sure he has a protein snack with him to be on the safe side.

Cassie and Faithe, did you have any trouble with ketones while you were fasting?

And did you tend to run low, or high? I've heard some say that fasting tends to raise their blood sugar, though I don't understand why that would be.

Nope, no ketone trouble at all. I had a few lows, but definitely not any highs.

I've fasted for Jewish holidays, that's no eating or drinking. No drinking on a 25 hr fast is way different from a 12 hour fast because dehydration will keep a diabetics blood sugar up.

I didn't have any trouble with ketones. My bloodsugar went low once, but nothing major (it was in the 60's). I dranks a little juice, and I was fine...

jesse fasted ;last year for yom kippur.for about 25 hrs.
We decrease his basals by 10%, but not really very much,. 1 or 2 x during the day i made him treat a BS in the 80's... just because he wasnt eating any real carbs and I was a bit nervous...
other tha that, he tested very often...
