After traveling all weekend with my dx daughter for a soccer tournament the whole eating thing gets a little discouraging.
What are some suggestions for eating while you are traveling. Do you take a lot of food or have you found some good choices at some restaurants?

I think try to go for things like subway, fresh sandwiches, etc. Stick to things you can guesstimate pretty well and bring your Calorie King book.(Don't leave home without it) Also, most eateries have nutrition info available, so you can always ask for that to help you with your decisions. And carrying as much as you can yourself is always helpful.

Uno Chicago Grill has a computer for customer use with nutrition info for all the foods on the menu.

When we travel on the road, we try and bring all snack foods with us. We always have good luck at UNO's, Chilis, Fridays, Subway. All are pretty much spot on with their nutrional calculations. If we want to go somewhere different we always have Calorie King (I keep one in the car).

Alot of restruants have online nutritional info. If I know where we are going, i look before I go.
I plan to make a binder to leaev in my car with all the info, but I havent yet. Amazingly alot have a Gluten free menu too (sorry off topic) on the website, which really surprised me.

You can look on the internet at Calorie King ahead of time when planning where to go too. I have done this and have my SD choose what she would eat so I know ahead of time what to figure. Otherwise some places like the fast food are in the Calorie King book.
We went to a hotel a couple weeks ago and the only place we could eat at was the hotel restaurant. No internet with us and not in the Calorie King book. I estimated then according to other foods listed in the book and on my Track 3. My SD wanted pizza one night and I asked the waitress and she was nice enough to bring me the nutritional value on it :D (we had guessed right with what it was!)
I hate to limit ourselves because of D, so we make do with asking or estimating when it isn't in the book or available to us to look on line. Then I check 2 hours later to make sure we estimated right.
As for snacks, we usually bring those along with us ourselves.

I always bring a banana (just in case she hates the food) and a travel size salter scale with us to restaurants. I explain that my daughter is diabetic so I have to give her certain things, and they're always really accomodating at restaurants. I try to stick to things that are not super high in fat, and if they are, I limit them (like only 2 chicken nuggets instead of 10). We always supplement with other lower fat foods. Calorie King book is good but I need to get the PDA version. I don't like that it doesn't give the food serving size in grams. I figure out the carb factor that way since I don't trust portion sizes. Restaurants are a nightmare for us not because of the carbs (I usually guess those pretty well), but because there's so much hidden fat in restaurant food. I'm usually chasing highs all night after a restaurant dinner.
