I'm not quite sure where to go with this one. My DD is playing a sport this spring. The team and sponsoring organization are not affiliated with the school district, yet they practice and play games on school fields and pay the school district for field time. The district's building and grounds manager sent an email out saying that bathroom facilities are off limits during practices and games. When I inquired about access to the bathroom, explaining our Type 1 situation, I was told that unless the sponsoring organization wanted to pay for use of the facility, security, and custodial staff, that the bathrooms are off limits. This has not been an issue for us so far since the one time she needed to go to the bathroom, she went into the school anyway because there were other groups using the building and it was open, but on the other hand, I'd like to be sure she can pee if she has too. :p

My boys play rec soccer and it is very common in our area for the recreation soccer (and other sports, I'm sure) groups to use the school fields. But I'm sure it's the same situation here. The rec league would have to pay extra to have access to the bathrooms. I would just make sure that she goes to the bathroom before getting there and make sure she gives herself enough time if she needs to go while there. Then you can take her to a nearby store or something. And of course, sometimes the school will be open and she will be able to use the bathrooms.

I don't think you'll be able to convince the league or the school to arrange for bathrooms to be open.

Around here it is prohibitive to have an outside organization pay for access to school facilities. I echo what Barbie said.

If I were the mom to a non-diabetic kid I'd still want there to be bathroom access. Talk to the other parents in the group and get an organized petition or something to gain bathroom access.

Lack of access to the school facility is pretty common around here too for sports teams that practice on the school grounds. They usually make it known ahead of time so at least you can plan to go to the bathroom before you come. It really hasn't been an issue for either of my kids (d and non-d). I am usually there too and can run him/her to the nearest QT if needed.

Thanks-- there's only 6 games left, so I think we will figure out how to work around this for this season.

We also play Rec soccer and Rec hockey while leasing space from the school district. Our Rec District puts a Port-A-Potty on-site for the kids to use. It might be worth looking into.

Our rec dept also provides port-a-potty's at the school so that there is always access. We even had a school that didnt have a potty, and after a few phone calls, viola one arrived.

Good luck.
