View Full Version : Ugh - still fighting the sickness highs

Emma woke up with a fever and extreme ketones on Monday. We have been fighting some kind of bug ever since
She kicked the fever but she is still coughing and draining horribly.
She's running in the upper 200s almost consistently. And I keep turning on a temp basal up 20% and its not keeping her down (well, I guess maybe its keeping her out of the 300s). I guess I need to turn up the basal but once in a while, a correction actually brings her into range so I hate to do that and then get a low.
Can't wait for this cold to pass!

Nancy,
I'm so sorry that poor Emma has to deal with sickness. I hope she feels better soon.
Poor girl - I hope she feels better soon! Can you try a temp basal of 30% more for a couple of hours to see if she gets into range - and ok, I feel silly for even asking, but...
With Minimed we need to make sure and set the temp basal to 120% - not 20%...I am not sure how it works with Animas, but I made that mistake - once!

Becky - On Animas you do +20% (which is basically 120%). You can also do -20% (which is basically 80%). My nurse had forgotten too and the first time she told me aboutu setting a basal, I tried to go to 120% and it stopped at 100% and I had to call her back to make sure I was doing the right thing! :)

I'm sorry your having to deal with this. I'm dealing with the same thing. Jackson spiked a fever Friday and now he just has cold symptoms but he keeps running high. We aren't on the pump so I have to just do correction shots. I was wondering how long you typically see high numbers when they get sick. It seems like there's no end in sight!

I hope Emma is feeling better quickly!!
Just a note on temp basals, if your child is on a low basal amount and you increase the basal by a certain percentage, then the pump can only increase the basal by .05 (for Minimed)....I can't speak on how Animas does the .025. But, anyway if the 20% was taken on a tiny basal amount the child woudn't likely be getting 20% more because basals can only increase by the smallest basal amount the pump can give, which is .05 for MM and .025 for Animas. And, the pump ( I know for MM) will round down, like it should. Like on a .1 u/ hr basal, +20% would be .02...so, if Animas is the same as MM, then there would be no 20% increase that hour, and the pump would just give the .1 u/hr.
I was told that for little pumpers that it's sometimes more accurate to increase the temp basals by number, rather than percentage. Of course, since MM only has .05 basal increments, this is doubly true.

I hope Emma is feeling better soon! Erin just got over having the flu and yesterday was the first day her numbers began to look normal. Hang in there!
