 Are there any parents out there having problems with schools? Children of any age can be effected by lack of support, being excluded from school trips, or even being excluded from school altogether. Have you had to give up your job to go into to give diabetes care? Do teachers understand how high or low blood glucose effects a child’s education or ability to concentrate?

Some schools have no trained staff to provide support with BG testing and insulin injections if needed if children are too young to manage their own care. Some school appear to have a complete lack of knowledge about diabetes management and are very reluctant and in some cases unwilling to support children with type 1 diabetes.

I am looking for experiences of parents with young children who need a lot of support and older children who experience a lack of support and which means that children who become hypo or have to treat hypos in class are often humiliated or embarrassed because staff do not understand about diabetes management. The children may also be at risk of severe hypoglycaemic events if staff do not know how the deal with this.

Diabetes UK , JDRF UK, UK CWD Advocacy Group, and INPUT are seeking parents with experiences of poor support at school. to take case studies to challenge the government on the current lack of support in many schools

There is more about what our group are doing on our UK CWD web pages. There is also a mailing list for UK families.
