My daughter was diagnosed with D 1-19-07 (D doesn't run in our family at all). Her diagnosis was horrible DKA in PICU for 3 days thought it was the flu.(long story short) My son Nickolas 5 years old has been drinking a ton and peeing alot. His teacher tells DH yesterday that she has notice Nick drinking alot more than normal. (she is great she took care of Britt at summer camp at the day care center) So I get home and prick his finger (of course after bribing him with dollars) and it reads 70 - mind you he drank 3 glasses of chocolate milk probably 45 min before I got home from work. The last time before this I checked his BG and it said 126 (not bad).

Does anyone know what the pre-diabetes BG numbers are if there are any??

How did you know your second was a diabetic, did you call your 1st childs endo and set up to do a blood test??

Im so worried and have been like this since yesterday..I could just cry, because my 8 year old understands, my just turned 5 year old doesnt.

Any suggestions would be greatfull...

Tracy, With my second child he was drinking alot and when I ckd his bg it said "hi" I called the endo and we took him to the emergency room. Luckily we caught him early enough no DKA like my first. Not sure what the pre D #'s are. I would just keep checking him. If you are uncomfortable with that diffenitly take him in.
Good Luck

My understanding is in a healthy person with a normal working pancreas if you give your body an overload of sugar, ie all that chocolate milk, your pancreas will do an insulin dump which might explain the 70.

Those #'s sound normal to me - my 12 2year old has tested at 60 before, as well as 120...just keep an eye on him!

For us, I woke up one morning and Kimberly told me Michelle had an bathroom accident. At that point it clicked, I remembered that in the last couple weeks there was a one or two other times she didn't quite make it to the bathroom. Then I thought, she has asked for water in the middle of the night a few times.

Mind you, I never did a finger prick on her until that day. She just finished a doughnut and Kimberly's meter said HI. Washed and repeated the test, still very high. That was it. I called Kimberly's Dr. and she started insulin that day. She didn't have any ketones.

With those numbers I wouldn't worry yet, you could always get the antibody test and talk with the endo. Nothing is for sure.

I know how everyone talks about their kids being diagnosed and how they found out drinking, wetting the bed (which he has done recently) and peeing alot.. Which that isn't how we found out, and I don't want it to get to the point how we found out.. I will keep a close eye on him.

You are welcome. I find starting of life slightly nuts makes my days much more entertaining. Glad you got a laugh. Thanks for reading. There is nothing like hits to keep me posting online.

My second began wetting the bed. Started as once a month, then every 2 weeks, then weekly, then 3 times per week. At the same time lots of afternoon headaches, very cranky and just not herself - she was laying around alot too. I tested her and she was 189. Then the next day she was 98, then 124, then 177. They did a 2 hour glucose test and she skyrocketed to 298. They said because she is diagnosed so early her pancreas is still making good insulin and will for a while.

Just keep your eye on him. The peeing and the tiredness were the key symptoms. Good luck.

We just went through about a month of high bg with my 3 year old son. He had all the symptoms. Bed wetting, drinking a ton. His bg's ranged in between 70 and 198. He had symptoms for 3 weeks and then his bg went back to normal and he seems to be fine. The endo told us that sometimes young children can have high bg if they are sick with a viral infection. Also, he was on a corticosteroid for asthma and that can also elevate bg. Hope it turns out OK!

Nick does has symptoms of asthma only when its the change of weather. We have had him on a breathing machine since he was 4 months old. KNOCK ON WOOD we haven't needed it in a while but with Spring here watch out. I will continue to check him when I feel the need if he is acting out of the ordinary... thanks again for all the support. Im at ease now, and someone has told me if it happens it will happen and I know what to do..
