My endo yesterday said that I am not to add .50 unit of Lantus at night for Deacon until I have seen a week's worth of numbers that show a waking number above 200. If they are above 200, then I am to add .50 unit. This morning Deacon woke up with a 384. I mentally tossed the number and said tomorrow will count. I am tossing it because nothing was the same from yesterday to today with food. It was all eating out. I was expecting this number too.
So do you guys ever do that?

Yeah, all the time. If something just doesn't fit number wise, then I toss it out of whatever I'm trying to adjust.
But isn't that the number you want - you are looking for above 200 right? But yeah - I do toss numbers when I know the cause!

If I'm testing Lantus dosages, I always put Elizabeth to sleep after a low fat meal, and a very accurate carb count, and conduct basal testing that way. So yes, I do toss numbers that add an extra variable on top of what I'm trying to analyze. I believe it's safer that way. I totally understand where you are coming from.

I think what you're dr was getting at is a week in general terms - probably just rough guideline - not so much specifically 7 days but if you see 5 or 6 or 7 or so highs. But in this case if you know the high was due to something else then yes I'd toss it.

Definitely! I am certainly not going to make permanent basal changes based on a weird pizza night.
Yep, we toss 'em. One practice I like is to write in our log why I *think* a number is off (not that we always know!). It helps me remember when looking back for patterns whether the number is a fluke or not. I think you did the right thing.

I toss numbers all the time. Jacob went to bed at 85 last night with over 1 unit still on board and I didn't give him any carbs because he had McDonalds. Sure enough he started to climb and went 95,115,155 (which was treated) and 145 at breakfast. It sure does look like the basal overnight is a little too low but with a high fat dinner I can't know for sure. We'll try to get him to eat healthier tonight and try it again. You have to have just the right combination to really know that numbers mean something. Jacob would have to go to bed with a good number, no IOB, no food on board, after a low fat meal and after normal activity before I could really use the overnight numbers to adjust basal rates. Even then I would want to see that pattern repeating.

I agree so much, in theory.
In practice, when I toss out all those numbers I have nothing left! It sure makes basal testing challenging.

Yes, I toss numbers for Kelton..I just need to learn how to do it for myself, and not stack the insulin :o

All the time, usually due to exercise or hard to judge carbs. I don't usually use numbers from my ex's house either, they eat a lot of hard to judge meals over there. I made adjustments after two for sure numbers though, I don't wait a week. I also lower Lantus at the first unexplained low...

You make a very good point. I should have said "really trust" instead of "really use". Sometimes you just have to take your best guess and shoot for the middle. Actually most of the time that's exactly what I do. Most of the time it's like throwing darts at a moving target.
