I bought some Frio packs b/c Alex is going on a trip this month. The instructions say not to put the pack into a ziploc bag or a plastic container or inside luggage. Has anyone really had problems with it being inside a duffle bag type of luggage? Or in a backpack? Do you think one of those sports napsacks would be okay? I do have a backpack that he could take that has a mesh outer pocket but I worry that the frio pack might fall out of that. I also had wanted to give the chaperones some back up insulin to hold for him but they keep all the meds in a plastic shoe box type container (larger than that but same type of plastic and top). If the plastic container is big enough would it be okay? (Though all the other kids' meds will be in plastic bags inside this box.)

I'm not sure what the best thing to do is. Just have him keep all the insulin in this mesh pocket? Give some to the chaperones w/ or w/o the frio pack (meds are kept on the bus all the time except when they are in the hotel and usually they keep the buses running but that seems crazy to do w/ gas prices like they are now. He's on a pump so he won't be carrying the insulin around with him during the day. He will just need it for a pump change or if there is a problem with the pump.

For us, it does work better when air can get to it. I have a mesh bag I use to put it in and it has a hook in the corner and I put it in the mesh pocket of my \backpack and also hook it to the backpack to keep it from falling out.

For the frio to work, the water has to be able to evaporate from the surface. If it is inside a duffle bag or backpack, it is partially insulated by lots of other stuff and thus probably won't get hot enough to be a problem to begin with. If it does get warm, as log as water can evaporate from it, you're okay. We've never had problems inside backpacks or duffle bags, although inside a water tight bag should probably be avoided if the weather is hot enough for the inside of the waterproof bag to get hot enough to spoil the insulin.

Good luck,
Nelson

Thanks. I'm gonna look for a zippered mesh pouch that we can clip to a bag but I won't stress too much if we decide to put it in his backpack or duffle bag. He's responsible enough to check it and make sure it's still staying cool enough and move it to an outer mesh section of the back pack.
