I just happened to catch this episode tonight. It was really interesting. Did anyone else see it? The child had an uncommon presentation of celiac so it took his drs 4yrs to diagnose him.

I hope that everyone has their entire family checked for celiac, especially kids with type 1 diabetes.

Our clinic doesn't do it unless there are symptoms or they are otherwise suspicious that it's there.

What tests do they do to check for coeliac disease? I asked Jessie's diabetes doctor to test her, and he did the test, which came back negative. She has had headaches and nausea for the past 3 years, almost every day (I'm not exaggerating...) and I also tried taking her off wheat and maize for 10 weeks, but this also made no difference. Could these symptoms be indicative of coeliac?

No endocrinologists anywhere near where I live, I believe there are only 14 in the whole country.

Thanks
Kay

Possibly. Here is more info on the symptoms:
http://www.celiac.org/cd-symptoms.php
According to this site, blood tests that are done include: Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgA, (AGA) IgG, Anti-Endomysial (EMA) IgA, Anti-tissue transglutaminase (tTG) and total serum IgA. With a positive antibody test and those with IgA deficiency, a small bowel biopsy is done to confirm diagnosis and assess the degree of mucosal damage.
For inconclusive results they may also do specific HLA gene testing.

Hope this helps!
