My daughter will start kindergarten next week and I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for me. There is not a nurse at the school at all maybe once a week. What good that does I don't know! Canada (as far as I know) doesn't have a 504 plan like the States. I know that I have to go in and talk to the school board and inform them of Ocean's care. I just want to make sure I inform them of everything. She is only in the morning class till lunch, that makes it easier for her first year. She never went to preschool or anything so no experience there. I just wish there was a sheet to fill out or a list of stuff that i need to go over.

Caroly,

Why don't you print out the emergency medical plan and fill in to meet your needs. Even though it may not be valid in Canada, you at least have a reference tool and it can give the school system an idea of your child's needs. It's a word doc, so you can even take out the ADA logo! I would say fill it out and be armed and ready:)

If you go to http://www.diabetes.ca/Files/kwd_agreement.pdf they have a letter of agreement between parent and school, it's ok, but not as helpful as a 504/medical plan.

Good luck.

Hello! While I live in the US now, I originally come from Saskatchewan. What part of Alberta are you from?

It doesn't appear that Cananda has a 504, but I found a couple of links that look helpful.

Good luck!

Hi, We live in Mission, British Columbia, Canada. My son Riley just started kindergarten this year as well. We met with the public health nurse and she made a emergency plan for the school. It gives detailed step by step instructions about his care and what to do and when to call an ambulance. She made three copies of this plan and his pictures is on the front page of all three. One is to be posted in the school's office on the wall so that supervisers will recognize him on the playground. One to be posted in his classroom and the third goes into a sub book for the days that there is a substitute teacher. The health nurse will be going to met with Riley's teacher in the first few weeks of school and doing random checks through out the year. All of this has made my husband and I a lot more comfortable about leaving Riley. I know it is just for a few hours but we haven't ever really left Rileyin anyone else's care. So far so good. Good luck with everything. I think this is harder on the parents than the kids.

My name is Teri, my little girls name is Courtney and we live in Surrey , B.C. Court just started kindergarten last week as well , boy do I know how you feel. In June I spoke with the principal in her school and made arrangements for her to have an SEA (Special education assistant...I think). She has no need for one except for the D factor.I'm sure that it cannot just be our school that has them , maybe worth asking. I know that they are allotted 2 1/2 a week for kids such as Courtney it just so happens that there are 2 other kids in her class that require this women for different reasons so she just splits off and takes care of Courtney too.

If this had not been a possibility I don't know what I would have done. Gone are the days that there is a nurse available in the school at all times and as we all unfortunatly know , alot can happen to a child with D in 2 1/2 hours.I was told that she willl qualify for this benefit probably up until grade 4 or 5 at wich point I am hoping she will be able to handle most of it on her own.

I also know that the Public Health Nurse will come in to train, but this I am assuming is not something that the teachers are willing to take on. I know Courtney's kindergarten teacher just really has no clue what so ever to do incase of a problem , she is completetly reliant on the SEA and I guess so am I:eek: Anyhow , it is something you could look into . Also , if there is not one already in your school I would call the school board and enquire about it on that level.

It sure is hard to entrust a total stranger to take loving care of your heart and soul:( I hope it will get easier as time goes by, had myself a few good cries so far and we are only in week #2.

Best of luck to all of you Kindergarten Mommies and Daddies out there!!!
