Hi Joanna
I'm from the Uk. Ben is 10 and was diagnosed 4 months ago with type 1.
The support has been fantastic. All insulin, meters, syringes etc are covered by the NHS. We don't pay a penny, and just repeat the prescription as and when necessary.
I can't remember what brand the meter is, but it does blood sugars and keytone readings. I'll check the brand when I get home (I'm at work at moment). The hospital also gave us an extra meter and finger pricker to take away on holiday, in case we lost one/broke one.
The insulin he is on is called Mixtard 30 and is a mixture of long and fast acting insulin. It works well at the moment, although we are talking about Ben eventually going on to multiple injections, i.e take basal, and then inject for each meal.
Ben has been offered a pen, but wants to stick with syringes at the moment. I'm not pushing him, he'll decide when he's ready. Next time his nurse comes to see him, she's going to bring some pens for him to look at.
The support from the paediatric diabetes team has been amazing. Ben has a named paediatric diabetes nurse specialist who I can call when I need to. She also carries out home visits approximately once a month. Ben attends the clinic for his checkup and H1AC every 3 months. Iniatially it was 2 weeks after dx, then 8 weeks.
The team also arrange an activity weekend away for approx 30 d kids, and Ben went back in June and had the time of his life!!
Anyway, I hope that answers some of your queries. I think we are very lucky in the UK for everything to be covered by the NHS.

Jackie, it was great to hear from you. Thanks for the info. I see that D is quite new to your family. Im glad the NHS are giving you the support you need. My daughter is also with injections at the moment (dont trust the pump yet, ) she has a basal and multiple shots. Well, thanks again for the info.
