I have seen some highs in the 300s after a minor low around 65...I've been careful not to overtreat the lows but 15g of juice sends her way up into the 200s or higher. Is this a rebound or does she need less carb to treat a mild low like 65? I feel like I'm screwing up but am following the "rules"!!!

For a 65, we would probably only give Jack 5-6 carbs uncovered. He'd be right up there in the stratosphere with a whole 15g of juice.

Thanks. For some reason these things always come up on the weekend!

I would think that if she is 3 yrs old and you caught a low right at the bottom, meaning she wasn't going to go lower than 65, then 15g carbs could possibly put her over 300.

Thanks...I feel so bad for my DD having to go through all of this while I make mistake after mistake! Thank goodness the highs don't seem to affect her attitude too badly yet. :D

Oh geez. Don't beat yourself up over it. I think everyone overtreats lows at first! Jack's first "low" was a 78, and I totally freaked out! :D
ETA: 15 g of carbs was our "rule" for a low too. I think they do that so you don't have too much to think about at first, but really, people would be better off if endos would explain that small children might need less than half as much to bring up a mild low.

You have to find out what works. I give my 14 year old 15 grams to raise his blood sugar to around 100. It would make sense that a 3 year old needs on 1/4 cup of juice. 65 is not very low and shouldn't result in a rebound, unless you caught the reading on the way up.

Your child is my daughter's age. We never give Bethany 15 grams to treat a low...even when she is as low as 45 (the lowest we've seen, thank goodness). We give her at the most 10 when she is this low. When she is 65, she gets only 4 carbs. Actually, when she is in the 60's, we give her a regular snack and delay the insulin while taking off some from the bolus (she's pumping).
I don't know if different rules apply for a child who is on MDI, but this is what works for Bethany. HTH and always remember that YDMV.
