Wasn't there a big deal made a while back about how Halle Berry had "cured" her diabetes by exercising and eating well. Which pretty much showed that she did not have type 1 diabetes. I know it was quite controversial at the time.

I think Elliot Yamin has been pretty active. He's from my area (worked at a pharmacy we go to, etc). They had him at a JDRF fundraiser and were looking for kids to sing with him. My 17 ds was too cool to even respond to my suggestion! LOL

The majority of them are actually T2, but there are several T1's on there.
If my memory serves me correctly, there are 8 T1 actors, 12 athletes and 4 musicians. The rest are T2.

I didn't know Halley Berry was diabetic. I did a search on her and look what I found. Apparently she found a way to convert from T1 to T2:
"Pregnant HALLE BERRY is winning her battle with diabetes, thanks to a healthy diet and good living. The actress was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after she passed out while shooting a TV show called Living Dolls when she first arrived in Hollywood. But the disease has now dropped to Type 2 diabetes because Berry is no longer "insulin dependent". She says, "I've managed to ween myself off insulin, so now I like to put myself in the Type 2 category."
This is from an article dated 10/22/07 from contactmusic.com.
Anyone else heard of this?

I was really surprised to hear about Elizabeth Perkins recently. I read an article about her in Diabetes Forecast and it was shocking how uninformed she was about this disease. She has LADA and was talking about how eating is the #1 way she manages her D (even though she is on Novolog and Levemir, which she said she was looking forward to reducing?!?!) I know often with the very slow onset of LADA it is treated similarly to Type 2, but my understanding is that over time (and as the beta cells die off more and more) the need for insulin actually increases, versus decreasing. Am I wrong about this? Also she was talking about how scared she was about getting a pump eventually and then she said something along the lines of how she was really afraid of having a shunt in her body. Excuse me? A shunt? Clearly she knows nothing about the insulin pump if she thinks there is a shunt involved. Anyone who is interested can read the article here (http://www.diabetes.org/uedocuments/df-perkins-0208.pdf).
I guess it is really weird to me to think that these folks who have all of this success and the ability to seek (and afford) the best medical care money can buy and yet they still seem to be completely confused about this disease. Goes to show that celebs are mere mortals too and in some cases seem more clueless than the rest of us normal folk.
ETA: Also we forgot one ... Kevin Kline's son has D so that makes him type 3 like all of us right? ;)

I usually wonder the same thing how you can have all this access to everything you need and still be so confused and misinformed. I guess just because they're celebs doesn't make them any smarter than the average person. And face it, the parents who come here and see out info are really above the curve in diabetes awareness.
And I wondered about Kevin Kline and what his connection was.

Elliot Yamin was at World Diabetes Day in NYC. He is a great role model -- every article I have read about him, he is open and honest about his T1, as well as being very well versed and educated about it.
Nicole Johnson was also at WDD in NYC.
Bret Michaels or Tommy Lee, I think it was Bret, collapsed during a concert in NYC at Madison Square Garden, I believe due to being hypo. If you check out dlife.com, which is where the above lists came from, I think he has a video about it. I wonder how well either of them take care of themselves.
I also wondered why Kevin Kline was the video guy for the JDRF walks. Now that makes sense.
Speaking of famous people -- has anyone seen the JDRF commercials recently on TNT? I watch Law & Order during the afternoons, frequently while doing other things. I have seen two commercials with Mary Tyler Moore and little kids, speaking specifically to Type 1, how they will not outgrow it and "imagining a cure" (I think). The first day, I almost fell off the couch to hear a Type 1 commercial. :D
Emma's Dad - ABC New's says he is Type 2 -with his pic, so it is him! Yahoo Answer's says Type 1...so looks like we have another Halle in the making- at least he can't get preggers!
I never knew either - rock on!

Kevin Kline's son has T1D. That's why he is so involved with JDRF.
Ok, my bad. Halle is an insulin dependent type 2.

Missy Foy is a long distance runner probaby going to be on the US Olympic team. She has posted on CWD in the Sports forum! :D She has T1.
We tried to watch Kris Freeman in the last Winter Olympics...he's a X-C skier but wasn't a front-runner so we didn't get to see much of him. Ryan was recently dx'd and really wanted to see him compete.
