Ryan is starting preschool for the first time next week (eeek!..but that's a whole other topic!). He's currently on MDI, and to get around needing him to have an injection bolus at school, we're planning on keeping his snack low-carb (we can get away with about 5-7 grams of carbs at the most). I'm really struggling to come up with ideas that won't get too repetitive. Does anyone have any creative snack ideas?

Thanks!

Pork Rinds are not what I think of as "healthy", but they ARE very low carb and my son ate those when he was on MDI. Also, I don't know if he will have access to a refrigerator, but there are several low carb and light yogurts with 7 or less carbs. My son has also eaten his fair share of cheese sticks. Sugar free puddings have 6-8 carbs. Sugar free jello has 2 carbs. Not sure if he is big on carrot sticks and dip, but this is also an option. Also, celery and peanut butter (my son would not eat either of these). I'm sure there are others, but I am at a loss right now.

We always have 15 or 30 gram snacks...so my suggestions may be too high...sorry.

But those 100 calorie pack of cookies, crackers, etc. all have around 15 grams...give or take a few.

Sugar free pudding. Apple sauce.

I really can't think of any with that few carbs...sausage, cheese sticks...

I am sorry my ramblings aren't more help.

I would also love some snack ideas as Courtney will be starting Kindergaten in a week and we are about 7 weeks into her new MDI regimin....stressful days ahead I am sure:eek:

We did:
small clementines 7g
cheese sticks
sf yogurt
carrot sticks w/salsa
bacon
popcorn

It is tricky because the sugar free stuff may not always be filling enough. The cheese and deli meats are filling, but you want to limit that because they are high in salt and they are processed.

Cheese sticks
Ritz cheese or peanut butter crackers
I'm always looking for ideas too. Pretty boring, but Adam still likes 'em.

hard boiled eggs--deviled eggs

pack of cottage or ricotta cheese

string cheeses

nuts, pumpkin seeds, you could make your own trail mix and throw in just a couple of M &M's for flavor appeal

slim jims meat sticks

Hickory Farms has meat sticks at Target that are 0 carbs

avocado (my dd loves avocado, so I mentioned it)

low carb veggies and ranch dip

cucumber chips and cream cheese

bell pepper strips...red and yellow peppers are usually sweeter

dill pickles (my kids like the sliced pickle chips and baby dills)

black olives/green olives

strips of cooked grilled chicken breast w/ranch or some dip

cherry or grape tomatoes

celery

luncheon meat ham, spread cream cheese on it, and roll a pickle up inside (if you imagine like pigs in a blanket look like)
*you could also use turkey*

Louis Kemp type crab sticks ( I think these are lower in carb, but might have to check packaging)

I did a search and found this link a lot of repeats, but some new ideas too.

Peanut Butter Drops (like a cakey cookie)
1 C. Peanut Butter
1 egg
1 cup spenda
**drop by spoonfuls on greased cookie sheet***
Bake 350 degrees 8-10 minutes
(flavor is mildly sweet)

If I think of more I will post again,

OK, this is my first post so I hope i am doing this right.....

This may sound wierd, but my son who is 4 1/2 loves Japanese Seaweed Salad and Edamame - both of which we can get in the supermarket. The seaweed salad has no carbohydrates and the edamame barely any. They are both super healthy choices.

Also, we have found that Noah likes eating his baby sister Hannah's snacks - Gerber Fruit Puffs and Gerber dried fruit bits. Since the puffs are small and filled with air and the bits are so tiny, both take a long time to eat and have very little carbohydrate. Again, I think that these choices too are healthy.

Good luck with your child's first day of preschool!

When we were on MDI, we were fine up to a 10-carb snack, and aside from everything else that has been mentioned, my son was/is fond of:

berries (2.5 ounces of blueberries is 10 carbs) and cheese (my son prefers goat cheese, and loves to try new ones, which is good because we always seem to be throwing cheese at him)

although I try to avoid artificial sweeteners, Dannon makes a good low-carb yogurt and yogurt smoothie

if your son isn't in a nut-free classroom, you can get a lot of nuts for your carbs (some people in my support group don't count the carbs in servings of nuts, but we need to with our son)

Tuna fish in a container to spread on crackers

A small portion of breakfast cereal (Kashi Might Bites are very tasty, high in protein and fiber)

It's been mentioned, but olives are a terrific snack, and you can get a *TON* of them for next to nothing as far as carbs on concerned. We eat all sorts of olives at home, but my kids mostly like the black ones that come in a can.

We haven't tried the seaweed salad (yet!), but my boys also like Edamame, especially the ones still in the pods, so they can pop them out (even the ones frozen in the pod can be defrosted and eaten this way, if they aren't available fresh)

Good luck!
