Deacon woke up at 48 this morning. He shouldn't have woken up that low. We don't celebrate Easter so he didn't have any candy. There was nothing out of the ordinary. I haven't seen a low like that in the mornings in a very very long time. I guess I will be doing extra 2:30 a.m. checks for the next two nights.

Is he on Lantus? Did he have a lot of extra running around yesterday, since it was the weekend? If not, then maybe the Lantus needs to be lowered. That's pretty low to be waking up

We had surprise guests yesterday at the house. He got to play with Marc and Paul. He never went outside but maybe the excitement stirred him up. He is on 3 units of Lantus at 7 a.m. and 1 unit of Lantus at 7 p.m. I see a rise in his numbers while he sleeps when the morning Lantus is wearing off and then he drops by morning. I had it working so well too. But I have been seeing a few unexplained lows for the past 2 weeks. Which Lantus do I lower?

it's frustrating when nothing "fits". So sorry.

I'm not sure which Lantus to lower, since its hard to determine when you are split dosing a 24 hour insulin.
But, at 7 am his 3 units is wearing off and 1 unit is fully active. I think maybe the 1 unit needs to back off since that's the one most active at 7am, but maybe the 2:30am check will help know - probaby a 2:30am, 4:30am and then the 7am check
Maybe on active days, you can skip the 1unit?
Is there a specific reason you moved to a split dose?

Sorry to hear about the lows.
We chase them a lot too.

We split the Lantus because it does not last 24 hours with him. It lasts more like 16-18 hours. I kept seeing huge rises during the night. I still see the rise during the night but then the nightly dose peaks and brings him back down. We definitely have an overlapping effect with the split dose of Lantus. This may be another reason to switch to Levemir. There may be less of a rise and fall with it.

What about a bedtime snack? Is he getting a bedtime snack? That might help ward off a low without changing the Lantus.
Sara -
We just went through lows in the am too. We split the Lantus as well. If we see a low in the morning, we cut back the night time dose. If we see a low in the afternoon to evening, we cut back the morning dose. HOWEVER, we have had success sometimes cutting the morning and having it even out the overnight readings. It kind of depends on what other numbers we've been seeing.
Also, for our DD, we have to check between 3 - 5:00 am. She doesn't drop (if she's going to) until then. We give the shot at 8 pm.
It gets frustrating doesn't it? Sometimes I wonder if we should just give one Lantus shot in the morning and cover the gap with Novolog until the Lantus kicks in.
Good luck -

My 4 year old daughter Riley Angeleen was diagnosed 2/24/08. Everything has been going smoothly until the last few days. We are going to learn the carb counting scale today- but she has been on the sliding scale. The problem is now- she has decided she is not going to eat as much as she was- so in turn she is getting too much insulin for what she is eating. Does anyone have any suggestions?? I feel like I'm on a rollercoaster with no way to ever get off!!!!

My son takes 3 units of Lantus at night aswell.. He has been waking up around the 90's usually. He did wake up at 47 yesterday, and that was not a good experience. We moved him back down to 2 units of lantus lastnight and he woke up at 114 this morning.. Much better than 47.

The school just called to let me know that Deacon is having a rebound high into the 300's. Shake head. I am keeping lunch and dinner normal that way I know what is not contributing to the numbers.
