Im so tired, emotionaly and physicaly. Im dealing with the loss of my dog Deno and Deanna woke up sick saturday morning (the same morning I had to bring my dog in) She's been running a fever all weekend, small to modrate ketones, no appitite, horrible cough with congestion. The only thing good has been her BG #s theve been staying around 130 -160. The endo has been keeping in touch with me every day and we have been able to get rid of her ketones, but the endo is worried about deanna's cough. its gotten barky..she was/is/had asthma but we havent had a problem or a flare up in almost 3 years!. Im taking her in to see the pulmo Dr. in the morning per the endo's request. Oh please let it not be her Asthma again..I really dont think she or I can take much more..
at least her foot has healed enough that she can wear her sneakers again:rolleyes:

I completely understand. We didn't deal with Westin's asthma for years either until this year. Here I thought we were done saying he had asthma!
Good luck!

She thought it was a nice greeting!!! I yelled out to her and said "hunny its not being friendly, its saying that your BG is so high that its not regrestrating! I had her wash her hands and test again. 262..better than HI...but we just tested ketones again and yup...back to moderate....I HATE D

Best wishes for a quick recovery!!! We have all had the cold/congestion/terrible cough thingie here the last 4 weeks, in fact, I went to the doctor because I coughed so hard that I popped a blood vessel and had blood in the mucus...YUCK!! I will pray that you guys will get a break at the Pulmo on Monday and that it is not her asthma. Hang in there, Barb!! I am here for you if you need a vent..anytime, ok!!!!

Oh Barb, now you have me worried for her:(. Fortunately for us, we never had to deal with any pulmonary issues with our kids, so I am at a completely loss when it comes to asthma. Can you get anything from a 24-hr pharmacy in case of a nighttime attack? Maybe you can call her Peds to call you in something just in case?

Sorry to hear about Deanna.
Keep her well hydrated, she should continue to use her insulin (NEVER stop insulin, even if she's not eating, in which case you'll have to give her a sugary drink). Don't hesitate to take her to the office/ER if you think she's not improving or she looks drowsy or her colour changes. Sincere wishes for a speedy recovery.

I just got back from Walgreens..After a little begging, I got them to fill her old rescue inhaler. It will do until we see the pulmo Dr in the morning. I dug out her nebulizer, dusted it off and will pray I can put it back in the closet. But it really sounds like asthma...that barking is a sure give away..I pray to God she will not need pretnzone.. still fighting with small ketones, Bg's are ok. I guess the ketones are from being sick. I will do whetever it takes to keep her out of the ER tho!

Praying its not asthma again. I would think those meds would cause bs to rise. I really don't know anything about asthma myself.
Sending well wishes your way....

Emma just had something similar last week with a very tight, high pitched barking cough. It was bad enough that we took her in to the ER in the middle of the night. The more she coughed, the tighter her airway got and the less air she could move. Scary!
They dx'd her with a bad case of croup which is constriction in your airway, not your lungs like asthma. I'm telling you all of this because... inhalers and breathing treatments don't help if it's croup. We had tried both at home and they didn't make any difference. I wanted to point this out to you just in case you're dealing with something similar. In the ER they can give inhaled epinephrine to relieve the swelling, and of course injected epi in a real emergency.
I hope your night goes well and that your week gets better!:cwds: Hang in there!!

Hey Barb, I am glad to hear you have some stuff at hand now...hopefully you won't need it but...just in case!! Hope it isn't asthma or croups as Amy described but "just" a bad cough that will go away soooon.....Hang in there and keep us posted..you know we'll be here!!!

If you wish to keep her out of ER then keep in mind you are dealing with two problems here: 1- is her airways and breathing 2- Blood ketones:
Ketones mean she needs more fluids and more insulin even if her blood sugar is controlled. (btw, check blood ketones NOT urine)
Airways are of utmost importance: monitor a) how many breaths she's taking per minute (I would be alarmed with anything more than 25/min). b) the colour of her lips/tongue, any bluish hue is an alarm. c) If she can speak a whole sentence without having to stop for a breath. d) any stridor (wheezy sound on breathing IN) is an alarm.
I hope every thing turns out fine at the end.

Her breathing does not seam to be affected, I do not hear any wheezing at all, just a barky cough. I did a peek flow test and it was within range . Her color is good. both on lips, under eye, and nail beds. Ketone's are now back to negative.
I had not thought of croup, she has never had croup before, but she has had bronchitis before, I have been keeping her hydrated and have been giving extra insulin as needed to clear ketone's. her endo has been a great help as far as that goes. She is congested both in the nasal and chest. The endo is concerned with pneumonia as well as her RAD (restrictive airway disease, the form of asthma she was dx with at 1 years old and had up until she was 9 years old.) Right now she is sleeping, I know I wont be:o
Hope things continue stable until she gets over this - glad the endo is being such a good support.
I agree with Wilf. Your endo sounds fantastic. Hope she stays level (breathing and diabetes) during the night.Ali
