SAUCY UNDERWEAR REP PROVES A LIFESAVER FOR DIABETES SUFFERER ZOE
11:40 - 15 March 2008
A devon woman who fell into a diabetic coma was saved by Britain's oldest Ann Summers rep - who had called to deliver a package of saucy underwear.Mother-of-two Zoe Aldridge was lying unconscious on her sofa after slipping into a deep diabetic coma until 75-year- old Gwen Bailey decided to investigate when she failed to answer the door.
Mrs Bailey hit the headlines earlier this week after a racy slot on the This Morning TV show on Monday, where she showed some of her products to Fern Britton.
But the grandmother- of-four became a lifesaver when she was making deliveries of underwear for about 10 women after Ms Aldridge held an Ann Summers party for friends.
However, when Ms Aldridge failed to answer the door at her Tiverton home, Mrs Bailey said that she had a sixth sense that something was wrong and gained entry to the house through the back door.
She has been a rep for the racy brand for 14 years and is a friend of part time bakery shop worker Ms Aldridge, 28.
She said: "I was delivering a box for about 10 ladies.
"There was no answer at the door and I thought that was strange because Zoe had said she was definitely in.
"I tried phoning but nobody answered. I knew in my heart there was something wrong. I thought 'I'll try the back door'. Thank God I did.
"Zoe was lying on the sofa. She was warm but I just couldn't rouse her."
Mrs Bailey, who knew Ms Aldridge was diabetic, dialled 999 and para- medics arrived in time to administer medication and bring her round as she began fitting.
Mrs Bailey, who had initially intended to deliver the package on a different day, insisted that she was no hero.
"The paramedics said Zoe's blood sugar level was down to two per cent and she was very, very lucky," she said.
"I was just in the right place at the right time.
"I should have delivered to her last Monday but I had to go to a funeral, which I think is quite spooky."
Although Ms Aldridge's boyfriend, Dean Taylor, was in the house, he was asleep upstairs after working a night shift while sons Kieren, six, and Sam, nine, were at school.
Ms Aldridge said: "I'm so grateful to Gwen. If she hadn't come into the house I dread to think what would have happened.
"I took the kids to school, got back, sat on the sofa and watched TV.
"I fell asleep and that was the last I knew about it," she said.
"Normally, I can feel myself going low and I can bring myself up out if it.
"I was sick that day. I didn't realise it would affect my sugar levels so much."
The next thing she knew, two paramedics were reviving her with Dean and Gwen at her side.
Miss Aldridge, who enjoys regular Ann Summers parties, said that she was expecting Mrs Bailey's delivery but thought that the doorbell would wake her.
"I had an Ann Summers party about a month ago.
"Normally, one of the group has one every five to six months," she said.
