I watched the webcast and it's difficult not to get somewhat excited about this. However, it sounds like it's only for the newly diagnosed, in which my son now is, but won't be by the time this ever gets out on the market. Did it sound to you like they still may have to take insulin, just at a lower doseage?

If it can stop the autoimmune affects, it would open up quite a few of options. The biggest thing, even with stem cells is the fact that they cannot turn off the immune system from attacking the beta cells, even newly grown one, which defeats the purpose of even trying with such treatments, it is the biggest hurdle, regrowing them is not the problem. There have been studies in the past that show, once the immune system is at bay, and has stopped attacking, that beta cells themselves, if conditions are right, are cells that can regenerate on their own, tight blood glucose control at this time is most vital though. If this drug manages to turn off the immune system from attacking itself, then it can open up alot for type 1s across the boards, this is certainly something to be watched.
