View Full Version : switching reservoirs without changing Quick-sets?

Does anyone else change out the reservoir without changing the whole infusion set? I tend to run out of insulin in the middle of the day (right before lunch of course!), so I have gotten in the habit of packing a reservoir with tubing into my lunch bag and changing it "on the fly" and then doing the set change when I get home. I don't feel comfortable doing a set change at work.
I was using the Silhouette sets and this was never a problem because the tubing is not connected to the set in the package. However, I've switched to Quick-Sets because they're shorter (6mm) and I love the serter device for those hard to reach places. The Quick-set comes with the tubing attached, so it's harder to do these quick reservoir swaps.

Can I just re-connect the old tubing to the new reservoir temporarily (until I do the set change)?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes, I've done it quite a few times. Especially when I wake up in the middle of the night and run out of insulin. I just take everything apart, leaving the set in. Attach the new res. to the tubing, rewind, detach the tubing from the set so you don't get extra insulin, then go through the priming. I've also done the same thing without changing the res., I just put some more insulin the the res. with a syringe. Hope that makes sense!

Thanks! That does make sense- I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't overlooking something now that I've changed sets. With my old pump that used luer-lock connections, I could never seem to disconnect the tubing from the reservoir, so I still have it in my head that I shouldn't try to do it- even though I've had a Paradigm for 2 years now.

My cat once chewed through my tubing overnight while I was using the luer-lock reservoirs, and I couldn't get the darn connection apart to replace the tubing. I had to replace the whole set. I could have strangled that cat, but learned an important lesson- pump and tubing must stay under clothing or covers at all times!
