Sierra is in 5th grade and will go to middle school next year. I was talking to the school nurse today and she said they have no nurse or trained diabetes people at the middle school even though they have 3 or 4 other kids already there with D. The nurse said other parents have asked for a nurse and been told no by the principal. Now I haven't asked for a 504 this year as we are newly diagnosed and our nurse is wonderful. I am starting to research the issue to prepare to ask for a meeting. Is the school (public) required to have a nurse or just TDP? Anyone deal with this in Michigan? Thanks for any input.

Good luck with this issue. I'm not sure what MI requires.

Right now in CA we are fighting the California School nurses who want it mandated that they are the only ones who can administer insulin. This would be impossible and hugely expensive to have nurses in every school. In our school we have an overseeing nurse who is on site regularly once a week and can be called in as needed and we have a health aide who is wonderful. My son is in 7th grade.

I don't know that I'd fight for a nurse...but I'd certainly fight for TDP. Others may have different opinions on this...

I have interviewed a number of schools in Macomb as our home is up for sale and we will be moving back into Macomb if our house ever sells so I may have some additional input.
