Today at 9am I received a call from our DS's endo....he now has hypothyroidism (Hatshimoto). I feel horrible. He will now have to take 50 mcg of Synthroid daily on top of his diabetes regiment.

I just want to put my pjs on, wrap up in a blanket and watch Steel Magnolias!!!

Will this affect his insulin intake? Those of you who are dealing with both, any advice?

My daughter also has Hashimoto's thyroiditis and is on Synthroid. We have not had any problems with Synthroid and insulin. In fact, she just takes her Synthroid at bedtime when she takes her Lantus, so that she takes it at the same time every night.

I can't help with an answer but wanted to send a HUG and let you know we're thinking of you!

My son was diagnosed with Hashimoto's 6 weeks after the D diagnosis. It helped that I also have Hashimoto's, so I wasn't overly concerned with it. I simply take the synthetic hormone pill each day. My son does the same thing and it hasn't really affected him in a negative way. If only the D was so easy. I am not trying to discount your concerns, only to offer encouragement that it is much easier to live with than D. My son has since been diagnosed with Celiac, Acid Reflux, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. If I could pick one to get rid of, it would be D hands down!

Kathy,
sorry to hear of another diagnosis...it really @#$^&!!!

I have Hashimoto's, and it really isn't bad, i just take one pill a day. If I start feeling funky my doc does blood work and usually ups the dose. BUT I DON"T HAVE D...so I don't really know if it messes up the blood sugars or not. Hopefully it doesn't for your sake. ((HUGS)))

Tony has hashimoto's too. He took it in his stride, at least it's only one pill a day, he says. He didn't notice any difference in insulin dosing when taking the meds than before. That's no guarantee that you won't see changes, though. As always, observe and adjust.

{{{hugs****** Were there any symptoms or was it just diagnosed from blood work?

Thank you everyone for the kind words. It was just a shock this morning. He has been feeling "blue" lately and freezing but it is winter!

I am just going to try to be very positive when I tell him and move on with our day. I would give up diabetes in a heartbeat but can live with taking one pill a day.

I appreciate all of you on this site. Everyone is so supportive here and it is nice to know you always have back-up!!!:cwds:

Sorry for your bad news. Aaron is probably heading that way before long -- his thyroid is enlarged but no symptoms/blood irregularities yet. Even when it's something easily treated, the double whammy thing sucks.

Ah...why do our kids need to deal with this stuff? Sorry about this recent diagnosis.

Sorry for the dx of Hashi's. I have it as well, I was dx'd last June. My symptoms were really bad. I had just had my youngest, and I was so, so tired. My fingers started to get numb and my hair was falling out alot. I thought it was because I just had a baby. I take Armour, I didn't like Sythroid.
