Hi there. My son Mike is 13 and has type 1. His friends were asking him alot of questions about D one night at our house. They all sat around the kitchen table and pricked their fingers and checked their blood sugar. Everyone was in range, so they were all relieved that it was not "contaigous". You may want to try that, too. Good luck and hang in there.

You should start poking them and tell them they have it too.

(Im not really swimmom, I just dont have an account yet)

You might want to talk to your teacher or school counselor about giving a small presentation to your class. This would help your friends understand that they are your friends and that diabetes is not contagious.

hi i am shannon and i always talk to the class with the help of someone. first year my mom helped me tell my class what happened to me. and then this year the school nurse and the teacher helped explained it to me. i have not tried this , but you can also get a simple book and let them read it. or you or your teacher can read it to them. after explaining it they were always understanding. they hate it that i have it.

My daughter was in the 3rd grade at dx and now in the 5th. The kids have never treated her like it was contagous or at least I don't know about it. They have all been good. At school they watch her and some ask her ARE YOU LOW? They try to help her with supplies when she is checking but at school they are limited to contact with the supplies. At home the friends like to get the meter ready for her to check. When we were MDI's I would pinch up the skin and let them give the shot. With the school parties and even b-day parties I have parents asking WHAT CAN MCKYNZIE EAT/DRINK. It's been good for us so far.
