I got a call from her Aid at 9:30 this morning saying that Deanna took a spill on the stairs (her classroom is up stairs, no elevator in the school:mad:)
her right foot on the right side at the base of the little toe was swelling and Deanna was in a lot of pain. Danna said she herd something snap like the sound of a tree branch when you step on it. ER x-rays show no obvious break but she sees the ortho tomorrow afternoon to see if its a tendon or ligament. The ortho wants to see the ER x rays, he said he doesn't trust the ER docs who look at them, said there are to many tiny bones in the foot that could be broken that they may overlook. Its now 2PM and her foot is pretty swollen and starting to brusie..here's the kicker..while waiting in the ER exam room for them to come with the x ray machine. ( I told everyone we saw that DD is type 1) I was testing her BG cuz she was feeling low..just as I was testing, the nurse or whoever she was came in to see how we were doing, she asked if DD was ok, I said she is just a Little low, and needed some sugar....the nurse said "why did that happen?, wouldn't she normally be in school" I swallowed hard took a breath and said "yes, and a low will happen anyplace she is at, any time, she is a type 1 and the pain and stress she is under now has caused a low, its nothing a little sugar wont fix." then she said........wait for it..........
"sugar? shouldn't you give her something to eat instead, like some turkey?"
I just calmly said "I'll take care of her diabetes, you take care of her foot"
the lack of education never ceases to surprise me

((((hugs)))) Poor Deanna :(
The ER nurse's comments do not surprise me one bit. I am sometimes amazed that my family and friends still think that Dr's and Nurse's are "All Knowing and never wrong"

OUCH!:( I hope her foot feels better soon. The Ortho is right, ER docs are not good at reading X-rays. They sent Seth home with a "sprain" I got the call the next day that it was broken:rolleyes:. Did you have anything to treat a low with you? Maybe you could keep a roll of glucose tabs or a tube of gel frosting in her tester for just in case? I can be scatterbrained, so I use that for backup just in case:D

I had her emergency kit with me that she keeps at school cuz I knew I would be away from home for several hours when I picked her up from school. I had tabs with me as well as everything I could have possibly needed. I was giving her the tabs when the nurse suggested the turkey
Didn't she have toe problems a little while ago??? Or am I just confusing kids? If so, her poor feet!

OUCH! I hope it turns out to be really bruised and nothing broken or pulled. Give Deanna my best.
How did it go with the pump and x-rays? Did the nurse ask you to remove it?

I took the pump off while she got the x rays, I didnt want to take any chances. they said it wasnt nessary, but they also said to give her turkey to treat a low:eek:
Sorry about her foot. :(
Sounds like you handled the nurse well, and gave her a little education. I hope you explained to her why turkey wouldn't be the best solution in that situation.
I used to be the type that implicitly trusted doctors and believed whatever they said. That was how I was raised. As I've aged, and especially since my son's diagnosis, I have learned so much (not just about D, but in general). Now I realize that doctors and nurses are just human and don't know everything (and frankly, can't be expected to either). I've really learned how to be a much better patient advocate which I am sure will come in handy in the future with my son, myself, and my aging parents.
The part that really irks me is when they get it wrong, but have an attitude to go with it!!

she had an attitude before I even spoke to her, I got the impression that they were put off by me taking her BG's and doing things to her without their permission..if that even makes since

I hope Deanna foot is better soon. The thought of going to the ER scares me. Not because of what is wrong but because of the lack of D education.

Oh no:( I just wanted to say that I hope her foot gets better soon!!!
Hey Barb, sorry to hear about Deanna's foot.
just an fyi - my mother fell a lot and would break her foot often - turned out there were issues with the cartilidge in her knee that actually would make her weak and fall. Maybe something to bring up to the dr tomorrow. Good luck.

OH, I hope she feels better soon and maybe it is just another really bad sprain.
GOod thoughts and prayers coming to you guys.
Ignore the nurse. THat is what I do now, although a lot of the docs are not much better anymore. I wouldn't mind so much that they didn't know about something but they do not have to act so superior about their lack of knowledge.

So sorry about Deanna's foot:(Hope she feels better soon.
As far as the ER goes. We've been in there many times and I am always amazed about their lack of knowledge about diabetes.

Geesh, hope she's soon feeling better and the leg is nothing major.
As for the diabetes stuff, WAY TO GO for your comments to the nurse!
I'll have to remember that one, "I'll handle the diabetes, you handle..."
I'm curious like Marisa, was it CS Med Center? That would be my *last* choice of hospital, but unfortunately we've had to use their ER before.

We have had some bad experience with CS Medical Center ER on multiple occasions. Now if we have to use an ER, we go straight to West Boca (1st choice) or Northwest (2nd choice). We are very lucky to have all hospital within 10 minutes drive!!!

Hey marisa
no it wasn't CS medical I will never send my child or anyone to that place, they nearly killed my father..long story..
I took her to university medical because it was just down the street from her school, not a good choice either because they do not have a peds dept. she sees the peds ortho today at 245, ill up date everyone when I get home.. Im waving a white flag now im sooo tired
