Have any of you sent your child of to football camp....OVERNIGHT? If so, do you have them wake your child in the middle of the night to test their sugar? My son is 11 and will be 12 in September. Any thoughts?

Hi Kathy,
I've sent my older boys to overnight football camps, but they didn't have D. But I have sent my daughter to an overnight vollyeball tournament. I would suggest calling the camp and talking to whoever would be in charge of the medical side of it, make sure he goes with a friend who will be a roommate, and make sure he has a cell phone and a separate alarm clock. I wouldn't trust the folks in charge to get up at 2am to check my daughter, hence the alarm clock. My daughter will often leave her phone on silent or vibrate... Even if they did say they would do a 2am check or whatever time you request, I would have my child follow up by calling me with the number. If I don't get a phone call with 15 minutes of our set time, I start calling her. If she doesn't answer, I start calling the friend, and keep going down my list until someone answers. The first night for my daughter, I had to have someone else bang on her door to get her up. She was horrified, but MUCH more responsible after that.
Is your son going out of town for this camp, or just to the local university? If he's going out of town, maybe you could find someone there that would check in on him during the daytime. If he's down the street, you could do your own checking. If he wants to try playing in college, good for you for starting down this road now and getting all the bugs worked out before the "discriminating" coaches can come along. Hopefully there won't be any problems with that at the highschool level.
