I am taking classes in psychology, criminal justice and an introduction to art. The discussion assignment this week was What is art? I wrote about how I thought that even science can be considered an art form. I used Deacon's diabetes as an example and I got an A along with many responses about how creative I was in my thinking and how true it is.

Now instead of being philosophical about it, I need to make a sculpture out of his strips, syringes and insulin bottles.

thats great!! I was picking up strips from various parts of the house last night and told my DH that I should save the strips to build a house LOL..

what would be really cool is to make a picture of your son, out of those things.. It sounds very hard,.. but it would be oh so cool.. even if you can make your son, if you just made a body/person out of it, it would be really cool.. kinda like there is a person IN all the diabetes stuff.. or a person behind it.. somethinglike that..

You would think that with all the supplies we use, we should be able to build something useful out of it.

This is what I wrote for my discussion:

Art to me is anyone's way of expressing themselves through creativity. It can be through architecture, engineering, cooking, photography, music, writing, movies, plays, sculpture, drawing, painting and much more. I believe that even science can be a form of art. People have to be creative and use critical thinking to find the cures or the medicines that we use. Science can emit the same emotions and cause the same debates amongst the viewers and critics.
My youngest son, who is 3, has Type 1 diabetes. He can have anything he wants to eat but it means counting the carbs and balancing that carb count with insulin. It is a fine balance and to me it is an art form. The graphs that are created daily by his blood glucose numbers can be spiky or rolling lines. I prefer the rolling curves. It is not what is normally considered an art form but I feel that it is because I have to use critical thinking daily. The ratios I have to use can take the edges off of those lines. The graphs can create a chaotic work of art.
My above statements also speak volumes about how art is in the eye of the beholder. Many do not believe science or graphs created from a scientific chart can be art. I do believe that they can be forms of art though. Those graphs make me think and feel just as much as my photography does about lighting, setting, color and depth.
