I was just wondering, are you suppose to ask your Endo to send out new Dr. orders for the school every time you change (or he change's) basel, ISF, carb ratio ect.... I hear that it is the law that they should have this info, but come on, what are they going to do with that info, my nurse has no clue what any of that means, she can't even treat lows.

I usually just let them know what I've changed. I want them to know to watch out for when changing things. I usually get a new endo plan when we go every 3 months. Since I'm doing most of the changes, it would be difficult to get them a plan for every change.

I let the school know in general if I am making changes ie: I'm raising her insulin a bit, keep an extra sharp eye out....etc.
Our endo is not the one making the changes so it would be silly for me to call for an order every time I changed something. I'd be calling ALL the time just like everyone else!!
My school has never questioned. They have always relied on me to provide any information. I have never given them specifics as to what any of the pump settings are as far as rates and they have never requested them either.

I am not sure what law the nurse is referring to that requires the doctor to notify the school when there are changes. Next time around, you need to have the endo state that you are authorized to make insulin changes on Cades IEP or 504 -- whichever you are using.

I know that not all endos in Texas communicate every change to the schools. My endo has never done this, nor asked if I needed such information.

NOT if its in your original scrip/medical needs list from doctor> mine writes on her paper that states she has diabetes and the what her needs are and that any changed are to be made and accepted by either the doctors office and/or the parents as needed.

We do orders at the beginning of each year, in an emergency it's enough to get him by. I also have a card we keep in his "blue bag" with instructions on it for his dad. :cwds:

I think all schools/states are different, I just get the medical list at the beginning of school each year and then I just let the nurse know what has been changed and she does whatever I say-she is great.
If I had to get a doctor slip for everytime we changed that may be every week or so sometimes. That would really be a pain.

You're pumping, right? So how would the nurse even know if you make a change? I rarely tell the nurse if/when we make basal or carb changes. Sometimes I do, just so they can keep and eye out, but unless they are pushing pump buttons to go into the programming of the pump (which they should NEVER do), then they have no idea when changes are made.

Our orders state that the endo is only to be called in a DIRE (as in hospital visit) emergency. She is just too busy to be feilding calls from every school nurse.

We make adjustments on our own, and I will alert the nurses to it. They don't have to d anything, it's just so they know what's up. We are lucky, our nurses are really on the ball and D savy.

There really is no reason for the nurse to be calling the endo. I'm surprised the endo puts up with it:)

Our 504 and Dr's orders state that the parents make ratio changes...

We provide school orders from the endo in the beginning of the year. It states something like - parents may make adjustments to basal/carb ratios as needed. I usually let my nurse know when I make a change - I know she doesn't need to know but it makes her feel better more secure about having all his info - we have a good relationship so it works for us. I don't think she has ever called the endo about anything.

We are on the pump, and here is why I think all this is coming from, we got Cade a phone due to the nurses lack of knowledge and on coming Demincia (sp), That took more control away from her, I wrote a letter stating how Cade is to use his phone, That made her mad, she says that's not following Dr.s orders, the principal knows what a Im dealing with and agrees that Cade needs a phone so she is just trying anything she can to make me mad. BTW I have a letter from the dr that says I can make changes, IM thinking if the nurse calls the Endo asks for this info then by law they have to supply it, other wise if not asked then the school wont get it.

I am not sure ours says this but I'll make sure it does next year.
