Defining Competencies For Healthcare Staff Working In Diabetes Care, UK

A new project was launched in August 2005 to define competencies for healthcare staff working in diabetes (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/linkfwd.php?type=kw&link=http://www.patienthealthinternational.com/ncm.aspx?type=article&param=501584) care. The project is being undertaken by Skills for Health, the Sector Skills Council for the entire healthcare sector.

The aim of Diabetes Phase Two is to provide healthcare professionals with sufficient knowledge and expertise to carry out their services in caring for people with diabetes.

Among developing competences around Type 1 diabetes (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/linkfwd.php?type=kw&link=http://www.patienthealthinternational.com/ncm.aspx?type=article&param=501584), the project also aims to look specifically at children with diabetes (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/linkfwd.php?type=kw&link=http://www.patienthealthinternational.com/ncm.aspx?type=article&param=501584), the transition from paediatric to adult care, pregnancy, psychological support for people with diabetes (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/linkfwd.php?type=kw&link=http://www.patienthealthinternational.com/ncm.aspx?type=article&param=501584) and erectile dysfunction.

Diabetes Phase Two follows on from a previous project, which developed competences around diagnosis, the management of Type 2 diabetes and screening for complications.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for healthcare professionals and people with diabetes (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/linkfwd.php?type=kw&link=http://www.patienthealthinternational.com/ncm.aspx?type=article&param=501584) to get their voices heard and any feedback is welcome,'' said Natasha Marsland, Diabetes (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/linkfwd.php?type=kw&link=http://www.patienthealthinternational.com/ncm.aspx?type=article&param=501584) Care Advisor.

The first of the draft competencies around Type 1 diabetes, children and pregnancy are now available for consultation. These can be found on the website (see below) which has a feedback section for your comments.

The consultation period lasts until end of March and the results will be published in July 2006.
