Kelton woke me up this morning telling me he had a stomach ache and that he took one of the anti-nausea pills so that he could drink water..His BG was 470 and on the ketone meter it started out at 4.7, is down to 4.6 and he did a correction dose of 10 units of the Novolog..

I called the Endo's office and the answering service will page him and have him call me back at around 9 am...Well that is nice it is 7:24am here..

Yes, at this point waiting for them to call back might be bad. Doesn't he need to go to the er often for ketones cause he has a difficult time of getting rid of them??? If so, with it being morning you might just want to wait an hour. Make sur eit is not ketones from no eating overnight. Sometimes my daughter gets ketones then, but rarely any other time.
Def. push the water, maybe some small amounts of food in case he gets sick to his stomach and insulin to cover the carbs of course.

Good luck, keep us posted

That is totally unacceptable to make you have to wait until 9 with 4.6 ketones! Our practice has someone on call 24X7.

I would call back and tell them you need to speak to someone asap. Ketones are nothing to mess around with.

Keep pushing the fluids in small amounts and try to get some carbs in him. This will at least allow some insulin into system. I hope you don't have to make an er trip.

The endo called..I told him what Kelton did and he said he should have injected 16 units of Novolog and drink lots and lots of water..I am to call back if the glucose and ketones have not gone down..

Glucose is down to 330, Ketones are up to 4.8  He has not vomited and is still drinking water..I am going to run and grab a shower in case I have to take him to the ER

Yikes! 4.8 is very dangerous territory. If they don't start to drop asap I'd take him to the ER.

Did you give him phenergan? Is he sick or did he just miss insulin overnight? If it was simply a lack of insulin the ketones should resolve quickly, but if he's sick it may be a battle!
Maybe his levemir is bad??

I hope he feels better fast!

I hope he feels better fast!Yes I gave him phenergan, he did not miss insulin overnight..He has been feeling fine, so this came on all of a sudden..I HATE D today..His numbers have been better the past few days..He started on Levemir a couple of weeks ago and we knew it would be bumpy, but not this darn bumpy

Poor kid must feel aweful!! If they continue to come down with water and insulin you can hopefully avoid the ER.. but if they start climbing again, I wouldn't mess with them being that high..

I hope they dissappear quickly and he's feeling better!

Glad things are coming down. 2.6 on the meter is still dangerous territory, so keep watching, pushing fluids and giving insulin.

Hope he is feeling better soon and you can breathe easy.

No reason I can think of why Levemir should be causing this UNLESS he is getting it in only 1 injection in the morning. In that case, it would probably be gone from his system by some time in the night. That could explain the high BG and the ketones, but I can't imagine your endo would have have him on that sort of regimen.

We spent over 9 hours in the ER yesterday and this morning, he was released at 0202 this morning..He was given 3 bags of IV fluids and insulin though the IV, this brought a 500 down to 170 by the time we left.

I had to go to the pharmacy to get a new Precision meter and it read a much lower number for ketones, so I thought I could treat this at home, but the readings went up on the new meter to 5.5 and I headed to the ER, from the blood tests he was not in DKA which is good, he was also not dehydrated. It has been determined that he has a stomach virus and I will be taking him to the Endo this morning or to his primary care doc..I will call the endo to find out who wants to see him.

On a side note he is injecting Levemir at 8am and 8pm @ 18 units at each time..

I am still boggled on how one day D kids can be fine and the next they are in trouble..
