I have been asked to speak to a class of Emergency Medical Technician students at a local community college about diabetes. I remember when I went to EMT school that we spent about 15 minutes covering diabetes. If there's anything you think that is worth mentioning, please do post it here.

There's been discussion before about some EMT's using glucagon and some don't even carry it. They use an IV solution. I'd just be clear on what their protocol is and whatever it is, do SOMETHING for a low blood sugar!! Sounds like it will be a great experience for both you and the EMT's!

Oh -- educate them on what an insulin pump is and what it looks like -- lots of medical professionals haven't seen one in person before.

I would also suggest that they consider looking at ANY type of bracelet or necklace that a person is wearing. There are so many different types of medical jewelry that are out now. It's not just as simple as looking for a medicalert type of bracelet/necklace.

these are some things i would go over

1. how to properly use two different types of meters
2. Tell them about insulin pumps and not to remove them
3. what a cgms looks like (its not a foreign object to be left on site or
disposed of in medical trash)
4.different thing diabetics feel signs (highs) (lows)
5.That time is of the essence not to relax if glucagon administered doesnt aways work but IV 50 does

i hope you also have fun with this and dont be nervous you will do great

Excellent point! My son wears one of these not a metal type one - I know it's not the right one. He also has a pump on, but I don't count on a medic seeing that I guess. http://www.fiddledeeids.com/catalog.php?item=99&catid=boys&ret=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fiddledeeids.com%2Fcatalog.ph p%3Fpage%3D1%26category%3Dboys
