Hi, new pump user here with my 6 yr old diabetic... he is a really skinny kid so it's hard to find any subcutaneous fat. He's also really active. We've already gone thru 4 infusion sets in the past 2 days.
any advice?
thanks

Sorry for your troubles.

We cover the site with a clear patch like Tegaderm or IV 3000 or Opsite Flexigrid. This keeps it in place. You could also try different infusion sets -- maybe the adhesive of another one is better. We use the Inset.

I assume you use some sort of numbing cream like EMLA and a disinfectant spray or wipe. Make sure that the cream is wiped/washed off completely and the disinfectant dries.

It must have been a difficult pump start for all of you, but don't give up. Once you get the hang of it everyone will appreciate it.

Good luck.

BTW: for some reason most people only read the Parents of Kids with Type 1 forum. If you post a question like this there you will get a dozen responses in a few hours.

We also cover our site with tegaderm. :)

thanks, I'm going to try some Tegaderm, plus I also found some stockinette at work...
I think if I can get the site to stop peeling off that will be half the battle.

Are you using IV Prep prior to putting on the site? Our 6 y/o is active also, but I always scrub the site with an IV Prep pad and let it dry THOROUGHLY prior to attaching the site. We don't use Tegaderm unless he's going swimming and rarely have a site come off. The IV Prep is more than just alcohol, it also helps affix the site, it's somewhat tacky.

What infusion sets are you using? We had a similar problem when we started pumping and he didn't have enough meat on him for the sets we were given and had to switch. No problems since!
