View Full Version : Had a scare this morning...

I woke my daughter up to get her ready to go to a basketball game. I checked her so I could prebolus her for breakfast and she was 21!! Yes, 21. Completely lucid, talking to me, behaving properly, like nothing was out of the order.
We gave her a juice box. My husband went and got a protein bar and a glass of milk. She was 107 twenty minutes later, so my guess is she was coming up on her own.
I didn’t know if I should send her the game so I called the endo and a PA on call called me back. And she said, sure go ahead and send her, just check more often during the game. By the time she left the house she was 260, so the carbs and the rebound really kicked in.
I have no idea what caused this severe low. She had a game last night. Stopped at Burger King on the way home. She bolused for the entire carbs. Did not correct the adrenaline high. At bedtime was 76, so reduced 25% for 2 hours. I checked her at two hours and she was 53 so I gave her a juice and reduced for another 2 hours. At 3:00 she was 114. So I never in a million years expected at 21 this morning.
Well, I haven’t cried about diabetes in awhile, but I sure shed some tears this morning. She seems fine. Didn’t even seem to phase her. But I’m so scared that she can go that low and not wake up or even feel different….
I was not able to go to the game this morning because I got the cruddy virus that's been going though our house, so I'll be really nervous until they get home. I know she'll be fine and her dad is there, but just wish I was there too!
Thank you for listening. Only you guys here would understand how scary this was.

(Hugs) I hope you feel better and can get some rest.
Maybe the meter was 20% off and she was really 40? Either way, I'm sorry you had to go through this.

OMG, sounds just like my son, who's 4...picked him up from school, walked home, up and down some stairs which are on the way home (this is really annoying, since he HAS to go there EVERYDAY...), arrived home, tested him....21 also (his record so far) !!!:eek:
He was acting just like you said....whereas for most lows he always tells me he's not well...
Very scary...
Hugs to you!
You rechecked the 21?
We once had a number we totally weren't expecting (a 300, when we were expecting a 100). I had the insulin for a 200 point correction already in the syringe when i thought to retest. She was in fact 80..

I know those tears! Just when you are moving along daily with D and things are rather "routine and normal", something happens to remind you that your child is dealing with a life threatening illness everyday. Thise tears start flowing and the heartaches.
I bet you'll be setting an alarm for several BG checks tonight. May you find sweet sleep and rest in between!

remember that chances of a 2nd bad low after a bad low are very high because body consumes its resevoir of glucose in liver after a bad low.

Sorry to hear about that. Did you recheck that number? Whenever I get a number that is very high or very low I recheck just to be sure.
Maybe the meter was 20% off and she was really 40? Either way, I'm sorry you had to go through this.

A reading with a 20% margin of error would still have only taken it to about 26 at most.
We had a similar experience last night, though not as extreme. He was at 47 when I tested at 1:00 am. Totally unexpected since his numbers were pretty good lately up until yesterday. He had no unusual activity in the evening (a little "Guitar Hero", but I don't usually even count that).
Watch out for lows with your daughter again today. They say that lows tend to beget more lows, so especially since she played another game this morning, make sure to check her extra throughout the day today!

Thanks everyone!
No, I didn't recheck that number. We always recheck for highs but since she was in bed and didn't touch anything I didn't suspect the number as false. Is there something that could make a number lower? Just wet fingers, right?
Despite the funky number this morning, she played well today. Running a little high now, but I'm not going to have her correct unless it gets really bad.
Thanks again for the support!!

I think after you see a number like that, you're in too big of a rush to fix it instead of rechecking it. We'll recheck in 15 or less minutes just to make sure it's coming up verses checking it again before we treat what we see.
Our lowest low was 25, and Abby said it felt like her brain was getting sucked out of her:eek:, scared the Ba Jeezie's out of me, and I had tears too Holly.
Lanae thanks for pointing that out - that's what I should have said. With a number under 40 we'll always get maybe 4-6 fast carbs to start with into DD, but then also recheck to make sure she was really low. If she is, then she gets more as appropriate.
Is there something that could make a number lower? Just wet fingers, right?
OK, this is new to me..........
Do wet fingers give an inaccurate reading???????????
Nick's are OFTEN still wet because he has just washed them before we check and he is a bit lazy about drying them.........

I was told, that yes if the fingers are wet you could get an inaccurate reading. Blood mixed with water would give a watered down number. Obviously it's got to be more than damp or a significant amount. IMO

Very Scarey!
Trey washes his hands and I tell him to make sure they are dry. We had a 26 once and that scared the cr~~ outta me. I was shaking more than he was. I did'nt take the time to retest until 10 min later when he was in the 70's. I was to busy making him drink a juice box, he was arguing with me about that...

I am so sorry you guys went through this. Lows that low are scary. I hope tonight goes better.
A reading with a 20% margin of error would still have only taken it to about 26 at most.
Apparently I should not be doing math before I drink any coffee! That is scary.
