if he's not eating anything and can't hold anything down take him to the ER.. if he's smelling like Juicy fruit there is obviously a problem.. Glad he's drinking.. check his ketones again, if they haven't moved, go to the ER...

Is his BG high or low? If high, the correction will clear the ketones. If he's low, have him drink regular Sprite or Gatorade. That will make his BG go up and then you can correct which helps to clear the ketones.
You can also do minidoses of glucagon. One unit for every year of age. It works but you can only do it twice and then it's off to the ER for D5 IV.

His b/g is staying over 300. For some reason the urine strips are reading giant ketones (burgandy almost black) and I retested with meter and it was .2 ???? How can it go from 2.0 to .2 in an hour or so with no peeing? He was throwing up a bunch and drinking tons of water.

Urine ketones are quite a bit "behind" blood ketone meters. The blood ketone meter is more accurate, but as always, be sure to take into account the big picture. If he's been taking insulin, then the ketones should be clearing or cleared.

I'd call the doc. I'm new to this so don't take my opinion too seriously but they say even if my ketones are moderate call them. That's weird. I'm sorry.

Sorry if this is obvious, but did you double the code key for the ketone meter. All of our boxes are currently the same code, but sometimes they're not. I'm trying to train myself to always put the key in first, even if it's the same code.

It is the first time we have used the meter. I guess the question I have now is..... Since his ketones were so high, can that be the reason he was vomiting? It is weird. His ketones are now clear ( maybe a trace) and his b/g is coming back down into the high 100's. How can one's body just turn around like that?:confused:

IMO, the ketones absolutely can cause the vomiting. It's happened with Emma several times before.
The best cure for ketones is always insulin. A good dose of it will work every time.

Yes, ketones can definitely cause vomiting....which in turn can cause ketones....which in turn....
Well you get the idea. This is how Danielle ended up in PICU over Labor Day weekend.

Anytime at all. Happy to help.
When I went to bed last night I had her old picture up, and when I got up and logged in at work it was that one. Seems Emmasmom was ready for me to update my avatar.

They're baaaaaack! Now we are battling lows w/ 1.9 blood ketones
9:58 64- 1/2c oj
10:12 69 juice box
10:27 65 glucose tabs
At what point do you use glucogon to get things rolling? Waiting is the worst when you know he needs insulin now.

Yes, the not peeing is very frightening. Do go to the ER anyway. I worry about acute renal failure with high dka.
