In all, the experience went rather well. Our endo, and this is the reason I love her, thought it was a great idea to do untethered, and even let me suggest the dose of Lantus to Novolog for basal. We are going to start with 4 units of Lantus and 1.2 units of Novolog for her basal. I mentioned to the pump trainer that it was important to let the basal still drip through the pump tube, so that's why we would do 1.2 units of Novlolog (.05 u/h for 24 hours = 1.2 units).

Elizabeth is currently doing 5.5 units of Lantus a day, so I wonder if she will be higher using this new dosage, especially if we start off with our same carb ratios. I did metion to the endo that there was a lunch to dinnertime peak with the lantus, so if the peak is not as pronounced if it's only 4 units, I'm suspecting that her carb ratio for lunchtime might have to be dropped.

Question, when giving Elizabeth a bath, do I suspend the pump before I take it off?

I know I'll have a million more questions, but that's is the first.

glad you had a good pump start and your endo is right there with you.. no do not suspend the pump for a bath.. just let it drip.. when you suspend it draws back the insulin a little bit.. its just easier to let it run.. this is what we do and we never even notice the drop or two coming out of the end.. I don't cover the missed basal either (for when she's in the bath..) but some people do.. when you get basals that are higher in units its more important to cover it..

glad you are enjoying it.. let us know how her numbers go!

We suspend the pump. Even though its a little amount, I want the record that she didn't get the fully-expected basal amount.

If there is worry about the insulin "pulling back" a little, you can always do a "Fill cannula" (or whatever the equivalent is on the Minimed) with it disconnected to get it "rerunning" again before reattaching.

Yay, It so nice to hear about Endo's that work with parents. :) We have a great Endo too.

Good Luck with the pump start. Please keep us updated on the untethered method.

We don't suspend for a bath; a rep (Animas) advised us to let it drip.

Good luck with the untethered method. I was a lot like you when were we deciding to pump. I thought for sure that we'd do untethered.
