You will make it just fine, just give yourself time to learn and adjust. We've all been there. My daughter was 10 when she was diagnosed! Saying Hi from BC Canada!:)

Hi Lisa, I am glad that you found this site. Jeff, the creator of the site is the parent of a child with type 1 as well. There are so many people here that are "old hands" with diabetes. There is a great collection of valuable information here. The people are great, and caring, and warm.
Browse around this site, specially the care suggestions. It'll give you some ideas on the different treatment options.
Take care of youself, you'll need your strength.

Hi and welcome,

I just posted a few days ago asking for endo referrals in Atlanta and the place you are going was recommended. I also have a daughter who is 11, she was dx 18 mths ago. We bought land in Canton (30 mi outside Atlanta) last weekend and plan to move there next summer.

I'm glad you found this site - it really helps to know you are not alone. The first few weeks you walk around in a fog...the next few months there are a lot of emotions to deal with but eventually things do get better. It helped me a lot the first 6 mths to read everything I could on Diabetes and try to become as educated as I could.

Be thankful they are catching this early for you and easing you into it. I had no idea anything was wrong until I finally took my daughter in and they told me she would have been in a coma in one more day. But she's a 5th grade honors student, in the gifted program, chess and art clubs after school. She plays soccer and just spent her 11th bday week (Dec) working at a Sea Turtle rescue center. Life goes on and is still good - it just takes more planning.

Welcome again..we are happy to meet you!

Welcome to the forum, I'm sorry to hear of your daughter's dxd. There is a wealth of information on here, great parents that all go through the same thing, and a good place to go where other people understand.

Here is a couple of links to get you started.

HI,
We are in Atlanta too and we were admitted to Egelston as well upon diagnosis. We currently see Dr. Hansen (whom we are very pleased with) and we saw Dr. Felner while in the hospital. I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. It will get better and it will get easier. Your daughter is in good hands and she will be fine.
I am sending my best thoughts your way! Hang in there.

Hey Lisa,
Welcome to the site!

Make sure to navigate around and look at all the kids voices, and all of the photos and learn about care techniques.

I am wondering what the numbers are like, if you know please post it here.

Diabetes is a lot like having a new baby. Everything is changing, everything is a surprise, and everyone is an expert.

You will find lots of knowledgable people here, and lots of understanding.
Our founder is a parent of a child with Diabetes, and he has been excellent at making this a helpful place for us all.

You have to follow your intuition at first.

Here are some good books, Think like a Pancreas, and the scott and bo loy books are good ones.

My advice, you have to take advice you can use from your medical team. They are excellent and diagnosing and treating in a clinical setting.

If you need advice for home, this is a good place, and so are diabetes camps.

Some people will tell you their opinion on what is best.
What is best is what your child feels comfortable with. Nobody else can tell us that.

Good luck to you, to your family, and remember, you can always come here. Also try the chat rooms, and the links for products, and for information.
Jeff has done an excellent job here and I refer my adult patients to this site all the time, even if it does say Children. There is ample info here for care, treatment, and products.

Keep coming back.

Mom2Madi,
Thanks for the welcome and I am grateful that we have caught it early for sure. Had our first education today and it went really well. My daughter is not on insilin yet but they anticipating that changing fairly soon. She is testing daily and we are watching it carefully.
I must say I love the Endo Clinic at CHOA-Egleston. My daughter sees Dr. Hansen and I cant say enough about her, I just love her, she has been very helpful, informative and very patient with my daughter as well as me. I would highly reccomend her. We go back Monday for the dietary education as we just couldnt make the schedule for that work today, we were going on 4 hrs of education and we were pretty tired(and my poor husband works nights and he hadnt been home let alone sleep yet) so it was best to come back on Monday. If you decide to go with the Endo Unit there please let me know and I will try and give you some pointers( I am a newbie there too but Ive been there 3 times so far)..
I live in Snellville but will be hopefully moving to Grayson sometime in the next few months(b4 school starts in the fall for sure).
Keep it simple and Life does go on..I am still in shock I think(alot to absorb from perfectly healthy child one day to Diabetic the next..literally. But TG we caught it and that all this wonderful support and help and modern medicine is available today ...I am grateful..
Thanks again for the welcome...
Lisa

Mary,
Thank you so much for your post. I really appreciate it...I am real new here and at this whole diabetes things so all help is most welcome.
We had our first education today and it went very well. We go back to CHOA Egleston on Monday to do the nutritional education(oh boy ...how fun....) ...Just could not take any more info in today...4 hrs of overload was enough and only one cup of coffee ...Im surprised I took in as much as I did..and I even managed to take notes that I can understand and read lol..
My daughters numbers as of today are:
AC1(If I have the appreviation correct ..probably not)...was 6.6 on 1/3 is NOW 6.9
The two tests she had that I remember (might be in reverese but I will try) is FBS and the other was OGTT the results were 187 and 117. I dont remember which is which but I know the numbers are suppose to be 126 to be diabetic by criteria as well as 199. She also tested positive for the antibodies. Makayla's endo said that it is not if she will become Type 1 but when and they anticipate it will be fairly soon. My daughter will be 12 in March. She did very well today and we are so pleased with how the process has gone, very fast and rather overwhelming but I must say I am quite happy that the situatiion is being taken seriously from jump street and that my daughter is in great company and well as under excellent care. I feel quite confident in my daughters Endo team as well as her pediatrician. Being new here in GA this is a bit out of my comfort zone as I dont even know anyone yet so the fact that we found a pedi that was quick enough to see the signs and take testing first asking ?s after results came back(immediately) and getting us right into the specialists the very same afternoon. Im very grateful I picked the Dr. we have and grateful that we caught this early enough that we can become more aware and educated b4 the honeymoon(as they told me) is over and the "fun" begins. We are testing 2 x a day and making lifestyle and dietary changes immediately( Think its going to be harder for me than it is actually for my daughter, cooking, shopping and being a good role model and following the good advise to eat better and excersise)She is such a good kid and is being so brave and attentive and paying close attention and doing a great job at trying to take it all in and be positive and not be to scared. I know it will eventually hit her(both of us actually) pretty hard but at least we are in a good place both in our minds and in our community. Support is key and so is education. IMHO
Thank you again...Anything you can, want or think to share please do....Ill take all the help and support I can get ..and will be very grateful for it...

Hi Lisa,

We just bought our land in Canton last weekend. We will stay here in Texas (you can see where people are from if you look up and to the right side of thier posts - many list where they are) one more year due to financial reasons. Then will move next summer. My daughter will go into the 7th grade at Freedom Middle School. I hate that she has to move (again - we moved when she was dx to here for better medical care) and start all over again. There are 1315 kids in her elementary school and she is the only one with Diabetes. We've had a couple of tough experiences with parents (fear) but my daughter has a really positive and happy outlook which I'm grateful for

Thanks for the vote of confidence for Egleston, as recommended by the other Moms. I don't care how far I have to drive....after the care we've experienced since dx (on our 4th and last endo here) I really want to get in with a good clinic.

I'll post again after we get settled in Atlanta and see if those of us in the area can meet up. :)

And I know how you feel - one day my daughter was running like mad through fields of flowers blissful and carefree. The next day we were in the ER trying to comprehend what had happened. Her A1c was 13 so they said she'd been sick awhile. I had no clue at all - even with her experiencing every "classic" symptom there was. Life will slowly get back to that new normal. Diabetes is never out of my mind still after 18 mths but it dosen't sit on the very front of my brain anymore.

I'm glad you are here...take it one day at a time.

Jo

I'm sorry to hear of your daughters diagnosis, But I'm so glad you found this site. It gets easier as time go's by, My words of wisdom are

1) contact the school letting them know what needs to be done and get a 504 plan in place.

2) Knowledge is everything, there are no stupid questions or concerns.

3) buy the book "Think like a pancreas" this book is wonderful!!!

4) post often with questions, good news, and when you are in need of support or have advice for anyone in need.
