I dont know how many of you keep old meters. But the other night I was mulling on an idea. For those of you that dont know, I professionally design websites, print materials and new media stuff like DVDs for clients in many states.
There are many websites geared toward the exchange of products like E-Bay and more. But what if we built a diabetes-centered site that allowed people to sing up and not only exchange advice but give meters and possibly supplies to newly diagnosed people.
I havent figured out all of the specifics but I do know that I would want a portion of the site revenues to go to JDRF.
Any moms or dad think this is worth looking at?
My apologies if this steps on toes at CWD.
Exchanging used meters is probably not a good idea due to the risk of blood borne pathogens. Also, new meters are introduced all the time with updated features.
And not to worry -- it's not stepping on my or CWD's toes.

On that note, many of us end up with extra meters that we get as giveaways at diabetes events or from our endos. I think that instead of sharing used meters it would be a good place for those who need a meter or strips to meet with people who are fortunate enough to be able to share a few. Sort of a diabetic craigslist.

Or like Freecycle (http://www.freecycle.org/) - Diabetecycle for new supplies?

I've thought of this myself - but the things that are needed a lot of times can't be swapped - like insulin.
I came really close to buying the domain name this morning. insulinmatters.com :D Just wasn't exactly sure what I'd do with the site. ;)

I think that you might actually be able to hook up with people in your area, so insulin could actually be swapped...just a thought. Good ideas!

I've seen other message boards have a "pay it forward" thread. It's sort of like, give what you have to give, and take what you need from others giving. Just another spin to the idea. (This could also be a good way to cycle books and other educational items too)

My daughter's insurance sends her tons of stuff we will probably never use. We also have meters...but I do share with my type 2 friends (new ones). Of the supplies she gets regularly are needles (which we do not use anymore), lancet needles (boxes of them), and strips for the Ultra Touch meters. She was debating whether to decrease the supplies or stop them for a while. My granddaughter just went on the pump on Wednesday (saline right now), will be up and pumping next Wednesday. Anyway, we were debating what to do with all the needles...if there was a place we could send them or what. Just curious....I feel we are very fortunate to have the insurance to keep Ashley safe.
