I personally think that if George Bush had children with a chronic disease from which they would benefit from stem cell research in order to find a cure, he probably wouldn't have vetoed the bill like he did yesterday.
I wish they would find the reason for the auto immune system killing the islets and get this disease over with!!

I have no idea if this topic would be allowed to continue either. You are correct in that it is political hot potato.
Do not be disheartened: there is much more promising research much further along than embroynic stem cell research. The home page of this site has quite a bit and the what's new section does as well.

Don't get me started - heh:p I still can't believe Bush got elected by the Supreme Court in the first place....

I find the lack of correlation between Bushes objections to the research and the reality of how the research is done amazing. Why is no one pointing out the fact that the bill only allowed the use of embroy's which were A) donated by the biological donors and B) will be destroyed now anyhow as said donors refuse the choice of embroy adoption. He says he is opposed to the desturtion of this possiblility of life, yet they are going to be destroyed anyhow. It just seems hypocritacal to refuse to allow the research that has the potential to help milliions of people, yet allow the desturction of the embroys just for the sake of cleaning out the freezer. If it's wrong it's always wrong, ya know.
I respect everyones right to their opinion and this is just mine.

Emily, I totally agree with you.....ALL POLITICS ASIDE......it is just a natural consequence that when you have an intimate family relationship with someone suffering from ANYTHING....you become much more empathic and ready to fight the cause.
This thread doesn't need to be a political debate over wether or not stem cell research is ethical.......the point Emily is saying is that if GWB had a family member with Type 1 Diabetes he would be much more gung-ho to assist researchers....he'd have a presonal stake in it. Much like the Kennedy family and Special Olympics.
But we parents are here !!! And have a VERY vested interest....I think I'm a better advocate than GWB anyways !!

EmeeSu:
From everything I've read, there are a number of more promising research results that have nothing to do with stem cells. Please see my posting in the following thread under the "Research" forums on this web site.

I'm not debating the political issues either way. Simply, consider that government funding using taxpayer dollars for anything (including medical research) will always have some level of resistance. But, that never stops JDRF, JoinLeeNow, and others in the private sector, or academic/public sector from pursuing research and there are many other research projects that have offered results with some level of hope.
This is truly a sore suject in our house. My husband agrees with GWB. Not I! If it could put an end to all of this crap Dustin and I go through EVERY day I am for it!! Thank goodness hubbie kind of sees it my way. LOL

And I have conflicting issues about this. Me being a pumper myself and my dd on the verge of diabetes. Yes I would like to see a cure but not at the expense of babies being made just to abort them to use their cells. If it is an abortion or a miscarriage or whatever...then fine. Besides all he said was that the government would not fund the research...that does not stop the private sector from doing it...but I think it is wrong.

but not at the expense of babies being made just to abort them to use their cells
I'm curious, where did you hear that anyone was trying to encourage anyone to get pregnant just to have an abortion? The bill that bush vetoed specifically said they wanted to allow embryos that were already slated for destruction for testing. These embryos are being thrown in the trash - why not use them?

Jordana...then I stand corrected. I was under the impression that he stopped them from creating the embryos just for testing. I am sorry.

All embrionic stem cell research uses emroys created in hospital's and fertility clinics for use by infertile couples having Invitro fertalization. The embroys are left in frozen storage in case the couples chose to use more of them. If the couple chose's not to use all the embroys (they typically create many in the hopes of having several chance's at getting pregnant) they have the option to donate them either to other's who cannot create their own biological embroy's for Invitro or to medical research. They can only be used with permission. If they are not donated and the biological donors not longer need them they are destroyed. There are no research facilitys in the U.S. using aborted embroy's for stem cell research (my understanding is that this is true around the world but I can't vouch for places like China or North Korea).
I would never support research that involved women being impregnanted so that scientest could then study the aborted embroy. (I doubt many would.) There is a source of stem cells being quite literally thrown away, seems like a waste when it may help so many.

Don't be sorry! It's easy to think that Bush was saving babies when he vetoed the bill while parading small children around him. That was the impression he was going for. Politics can be an ugly thing.

For the people in Florida, last summer Senator Mel Martinez PROMISED the children from the JDRF Children's Congress, that he would vote as his "dear friend Bill Frist would vote". I reminded him of this in a fax the day before the vote. Needless to say, once again Mel Martinez has disappointed the constituents that sat in his conference room when he made that promise directly to the children. Keep that in mind during the next election.
