As some of you may remember Alex started running a fever on 12/25 and we ended up bringing him to the ER on 12/27 (see previous post here http://forums.childrenwithdiabetes.com/showthread.php?t=10205. They saw him and did lots of blood work to see what was happening. We stayed about 5hrs till they said we could go because it looked like we had it under control and he didn't need any fluids. They determined it must just be a virus that needed to run its course. We got a call that afternoon from his endo saying he was concerned because his white blood cell were low and he wanted to repeat the blood work on 12/31. Well the next day 12/28 he started with a rash over his entire body, probably virus related. So they took more blood on 12/31 and that evening his nurse called and said his white blood cells were still low but coming up a little. She said our endo would call us if anything else came up. Well this morning 1/2, he called. He seemed pretty concerned now about his blood platelets being very low. Asked again if he was bruising, gums bleeding etc. I said no. He said he wants to fax his results to our pedi and for us to go see him first thing tomorrow. All this info has got me pretty confused now and honestly a little worried. I started searching for info on the net trying to be prepared for tomorrows appointment and I keep running into all the other autoimmune diseases, particularly ITP, Grave's, Hashimoto's, and CVID. I hate to worry but I'd like to be prepared with questions. After doing a search on CWD, I noticed several posts with Hashimoto's, and Grave's. Any thoughts? Ideas? Thanks

I have auto immune issues . Quite a few acctually but the main culpret right now is the low whie blood cell count. In an adult it can cause arthritic pain, lethargy, etc,etc all the same buggers as other diseases.
In children I have no reall idea.
I do tend to bleed more and bruise very easily.
I wish you the best and hope he is at least feeling better,
Keep us posted,

I hope they figure this out...
I really don't have any knowledge to offer you, but I do wish you the best of luck...when I try and search for anything medical, I get the most from wikipedia...
My husband has CVID. Once the initial "shock" of it, it isn't so bad. He was getting sick a lot with pneumonia - 5 times in 6 months. His white blood count was very low.
Now 6 months into it, it's not a big deal so don't worry too much about CVID. When you get results back, if you would like to know more I would be happy to talk to you, just PM me and we can chat. I don't want to go to into it with you now cause hopefully your son just has a cold. But I want to ease your mind if it is CVID.
Good luck - my thoughts are with you.

Hi Riccog -
It does sound like a virus.
Not sure about the white blood cells.
But something else to keep in mind that is often over looked - a yeast infection. A yeast infection is very common especially from over prescribed antibiotics. And he was probably loaded up in the ER with them.
My nephew had a rash from too many antibiotics. They at least acknowledged it as a yeast infection, but gave a topical cream.
Problem is, that doesn't address the source of the problem only the symptom. Your guy (regardless of what is found) should get on high potency Probiotics to repopulate is lower GI tract. Some very good probiotics we use from Douglas Labs for Dana - http://www.douglaslabs.com/product.cfm?litm=80441-2X
Yeast and fungus can run ramped in kids and adults when the good bacteria in the GI tract is killed off. Typical symptoms of yeast/fungus infections include -
Toenail fungus, bad breath, psoriasis, rashes, GI issues...So you can see it is very difficult to pin down to the actual cause to some of the symptoms.
Hope it helps!
Good luck.
Sounds very stressful--I hope they figure this out soon.

Thanks for the replies. Alex actually wasn't on any antibiotics. I really do hope I am worrying myself for nothing but I'd hate to be blindsided.

I am sorry you are worried. I hope it is nothing "additional" but a simple virus causing the low white blood count. I have no advice to give as I am not familiar (thankfully) with any other auto-immune disorders.
((hugs))
Please keep us posted! We are here for you!

Thanks for all the support. We just got home from his pedi and he really mad us feel better. His white blood cells are on the lower end of normal which he said was fine, no need to be alarmed. He said his blood platelets are low but could be a number of things. He said the way Alex presented, he would probably think that it was maybe an inaccurated test. I did express my concern about other autoimmune diseases and that I would like to make sure everything was ok. He said it wouldn't be out of the question to do another CBC this coming monday. Looking better so far :).
oh good :) you must feel a big sense of relief!
