I was at work tonight, working with a younger kid.. he's probably 20/21.. nice kid.. but OMG.. We got talking about K and diabetes.. I just mentioned she has it and that a lot of people can't watch her during the day because they don't understand what to do.. and he says, oh, ya, I know.. my nephew was just dx with a milk allergy:eek: OMG.. all I could do was laugh.. He's a young kid.. and obviously doesn't know what diabetes means.. I did explain a little bit more to him just in coversation.. I didn't go at him for the comment, he's a young guy and doesn't know what diabetes means.. I told him how we have to count every carb K eats and match insulin..

I still can't get mad at this comment, its funny to me.. its so out there that its funny!

Well, a milk allergy is BAD ~ I think, if it were me, I might jsut take Type 1. My mom has a lactose allergy...did you know that most BBQ sauces have lactose, butter, every restaurant puts butter on its steak when they grill it, etc. My mom has been hospitalized because she had 1 little taste of something with lactose...no baked goods, no restaurants, no ice cream (well, soy ice cream), no getting coffee at a drive through...it really sucks - her diet is a tough one because she is also Celiac...I mean, my mom has the sh*ts all day long, every day...and she would murder me if she knew I wrote this...

Anyway, my two cents...poor kid. At least he tried to be sensitive...but he is boy ;) just kididn, just kiddin...

You gotta laugh!
That comment is almost as good as the one made to me by a 'mate' (loose term!) when Tyler was diagnosed. Apparently she knew just how I felt being told my son had a chronic condition that could be life threatening because when her son was CONSTIPATED.........

Yeah, right!

he actually used the words 'lactose intolerant' which I believe is different than a milk allergy.. but I'm not positive on that.. I have a friend who's son can't have milk, no dairy at all.. it causes him to be hyperactive.. I don't think it does anything physical to him (like belly aches, or the sh!ts (LOL..your mom ;) ) just makes him off the wall. she actually experimented with it.. took him off all dairy.. his behavior in school changed.. started giving him dairy again (she also cut out gluten and was trying to see if it was really dairy too) and the teachers commented on how 'spacy' and off the wall he was before she could mentioin to them that he was having dairy..

..

:D:D:D THAT MADE ME LAUGH!!!

Our neighbor has A LOT of allergies. i think she might even be allergic to air.. haha just kidding, but really, is DEATHLY allergic to milk. But she's also allergic to ALL tree nuts, and gluten. I'm not sure what she eats?? Tofu? But i think i would still take food allergies over Type 1. it's restricting, but no long term side effects that could happen. and I'm sure she'll be very creative with her foods.

Actually, my mom's colon has been destroyed and she has had to have surgery on her small intestines...it affects her everyday, just like T1 affects us. It is easier in some ways, but there are days she can't go to work because someone used a spoon to stir something and then didn't wash it good...it could kill her very easily and has come close two or three different times. My mom lives with us now, and my T1 Daughter often says she is glad she has D instead of what Grandma has...as she listens to grandma retching in the toilet...

I mean, it is really bad...and no amount of lactaid can help:rolleyes:

I got something like that once. A woman told me that she knew what it felt like to be a diabetic like me because she can't eat chocolate (it makes her nauseous). I told her that I eat chocolate just fine, quite frequently actually, I just have to take insulin for it.

But i think i would still take food allergies over Type 1. it's restricting, but no long term side effects that could happen.

Not quite "no" long term effects, just different ones. My sister was told that my nephew just wouldn't grow at all if he continued to have foods with milk protein (he didn't grow at all for several months, severe diarrhea and vomiting, huge bloated belly), and then there is a higher risk of cancer if he doesn't continue to avoid it when he's an adult. He's still only 2 years old, and his diet is WAY more restricted than mine (and I'm in the beginning stages of developing gastroparesis). I see what you're saying, though.

You guys crack me up!!! To funny..... I like when People try to show compasion and say "Oh I know how you feel, When I have chocolate I get zits!!" like T1 and zits are anywhere close in the scope of things...

I was venting in my Sunday School class a while ago about family members who just didn't get it and would complain about things that I found trivial. A friend told me "Kristi, you have to love them where they're at". That was a light bulb moment for me. Before Dec. 2005, type 1 didn't mean that much to me. I would have made the same silly comments that frustrate me so much sometimes now.

My son has since been diagnosed Celiac, so he also eats gluten free. This is certainly not easy either. Unfortunately, we don't have the luxury to pick and choose which chronic illness we would prefer to have. Whatever each individual is facing is a big deal to them. I do get frustrated when those close to me seem to not get it, but if you don't live it, I guess it is hard to completely get it.

I find myself being more sensitive to other people now. I listen more closely and try to ask more questions if it is a medical condition that I am not familiar with. There are a couple of boys in our church who have had food allergies for a long time, even before my son's D. I never thought anything about it UNTIL my son was diagnosed celiac. NOW I realize what a big deal it is. It didn't mean much to me until it affected me personally. The grass is always greener on the other side...

I am not saying all this to belittle your feelings. Obviously, I get frustrated by others comments as well. My perspective has just changed as my son's dietary needs have changed. If I had the choice, I would ditch D. However, we're living with both and both have their own challenges.

Yep, a girl I went to high school with told me she knew exactly how I felt when ds was diagnosed because her CAT also had diabetes. I love animals as much as the next person, but if I had to choose between my child having d and my cat having d...well, let's just say it would be a very easy decision!
