Going to in-laws for dinner carb counting will be hard any tips. We're on H, Lantus at night and Nph for certain meals, mdi of course.

We always go to my MIL for Thanksgiving and x-mas eve, I just bring our travel salter scale and the calorie king book and weigh and measure everything. I ask what's in stuff im not sure about and just make a best guess.

Aaron is the King of the Guesstimate. I'll be still trying to do some semi-accurate rough math, fretting because he doesn't want to pull out measuring cups at a dinner party, and he's already bolused and is chowing down. It's astonishing how often he gets it right.
It helps that he's bigger so not so sensitive to small errors in dosing.
I second the scale and a few trusty carb ratios. If you know what is going to be served in advance (or can at least hang out in the kitchen to taste test!) that can make things easier.
I usually focus on getting the most carb laden item counted right and then (try to:)) worry less about the other stuff.
I sometimes offer to bring an appetizer that I know my kids will really like and then because they eat more of that and less at the meal that helps minimize the guessing.
Another strategy is to get a good count on the dessert (again, you might offer to bring one). Since that is probably where most of the carbs will be, you can worry less about the other stuff if you have a good count for the bulk of the carbs.

Bring whatever it is that you use to measure at home.
Or you can eyeball it.
Either way find out what you're having before hand. It'll make it easier.

My suggestion would be to bring what you use at home for measuring and do your best to guesstimate. More importantly though relax and be okay with the fact that it's a holiday and every child should get to indulge, if you have to deal with a high later or check bg more frequently that is better than your kid feeling left out at all. It was really hard for me at first to just accept that he would likely be high later but that it was more important to let him be a kid. Now I figure we get highs all the time for no known reason, at least on holidays a usually know where the highs are coming from:rolleyes:.
Have a great time and try not to worry about it too much (I know, easier said then done)

We did Thanksgiving at a friends house this year. We brough our scale.. Worked out great. I also brought my carb book just in case, but i also wrote my stuff on a piece of paper of most commonly eaten thanks giving foods.. the dinner part.. PIECE OF CAKE.. the desserts.. no scale or book will help.. guess, eyeball and pray is best !!! Its just like going out to eat..

Go have a great time.
Estimate with the error on the low side of carbs and correct at home if you need to. I one dinner it wont mess with your A1c.
Be sure to have some glucotabs so that if dinner runs late you can avoid a low.
